I have tried towels a couple of times, and it IS a nice feeling, I will give you that Kristoffer. But to me it feels just as efficient to just keep my face right in front of the shower-head for a minute, and maybe some hair conditioner.
A bit of the problem is that there are limited space for drying towels when you live in an apartment with four other guys. Maybe when I get a more roomy place to live.

Just to share another one of my crazy ideas... British Heart Foundation shopping store
"Moist heat pad." Says it all really.
I bought one of these and it works well, is the right size and leaves your face hot and wet. It has to be safer than microwaving a wet towel.
Unfortunately my microwave is too far from where I shave, so that's a deal breaker for me.

I do not use a full size towel. I use one that is just big enough to wrap around my face and tuck into itself behind my neck so that while I am heating the beard up I can strop and make lather. Saves time and you don't have a huge wet towel.

First off, I decide if I need to wash my hair. I have quite long hair (heck, I'm a bassist so what did you expect). This usually is every 3 days or so, so if I don't feel I need to wash it I then decide if I need a shower, which depend from day to day, so it's about a 50% chance I shower before shaving in the morning.

If I take a shower, I wash my face with some Addidas Facial Cleanser and then proceed to shaving, which is just hot water splashed on my face before face-lather. This give a quite good shave, but we can do better.

The hot towel treatment (towel dipped in warm water) work a bit better for me, plus it's really nice. I think the reason I get better shaves w/out showering is because I spend more time preping, and because my face isn't really saturated with water, so when I do the prep my facial hair gets softened enough for the razor to do it's work, but my skin is still dry enough to withstand the exfoilating of the razor.

Impossible to truly prefer one over the other. I guess (keeping in mind that 'better' is a subjective term, cats being better than dogs because they can care for themselves more, but dogs being better than cats because they interact more) I'd have to conclude that a shower is "better" for me because I use it more frequently to prepare. Or more accurately I use it to avoid preparing with the hot towel. Not that I dislike the hot towel prep. I quite enjoy it on those occasions when it has been employed. it is better than showering in that it gives a few moments of luxurious calm before the shave begins. I don't get hat in the shower while digging wax out of my ears. The main reason I use the shower to prep is that it happens while I'm washing. No extra effort. Conservation of motion.

I would say shower, but due to back problems I actually take a long hot bath and just use a good moisturizing shampoo on my beard. I can't stand for any longer than 15 min.,so if I stand for the shower, I won't be able to stand and shave, so I chose the next best option.

This is a good point. Not so much for the exfoliating but if your skin gets too hot and hydrated it swells which means less of the stubble is exposed.
