Finally had an accident
Well, it finally happened today. I was looking forward to the day's shave as usual, maybe a bit more so today. I had just received my soap from Mama Bear and I had a new No 1 Dubl Duck to try out. The razor looked as if it had never been used. I got it from the one and only Bob Keyes, aka Altima55. If you don't know, he's probably the best vintage razor seller on Ebay. If your lucky enough to win one of his, you know your getting something worth while, practically new in most cases. My prep was the old hot towel, followed by Castle Forbes pre shave. I mixed up some Mama Bear "Spellbound Woods" in my SRD Bowl. Nothing but her soap, I wanted to see how it lathers up. I have to say, I was impressed. It did a good job all by itself, without any help from Glycerin or "Kiss my Face" shave cream.
Anyway, I stropped up the duck on my Tony Miller 3" Red Latigo, 50 laps, followed by 10 on my Honey Leather solingen. The soap did not dry out, it was still on my face, but I still did a second coat with my Rooney super badger. I'm over the sink, on my first pass and I dropped the razor, my biggest fear comes to life. I often thought about it, but it never happened until today. Bad enough that my mint duck hit the porcelin sink, It managed to take out my left thumb on the way down. It was a direct hit with malice. It looked like a scene out of one of the SAW Movies. There was blood everywhere. The whole time, I'm thinking, God, I hope the razor's OK. It would suck if it got nicked...I know, I have a problem. Then, I'm wondering, "How am I going to hide this from my girl?" I dont' want to hear, " I knew it ! I knew you'd cut yourself one day.....So, after the carnage,
I've got a golf ball size bandage on my thumb as I type. Let's hope this is the last time I try to decapitate my thumb....
P.S. If your wondering, The duck is OK....

Thanked: 278So how is the razor??????
Ah didn't see the P.S.
How are you feeling now?
I hope you gave up on the shave. Don't know about you, I'm fine seeing other people's blood, but if I see my own I get the shakes/nausea/diziness/come close to fainting.Last edited by Rajagra; 02-28-2009 at 11:10 PM.

Thanked: 11Oh geez,
I'm just dreading for the day this happens. I wouldn't wanna hear it from the naysayers either. Good luck explaining your wound.

I'm feeling OK, Thanks for asking, and I did finish the shave believe it or not. I wasn't sure at first if I'd be able to, but I mustered up enough strenght, and went for it.....After all, A shave is a terrilbe thing to waste.....Rich

I know, isn't it in the back of your mind when you shave, that at any minute, you could drop the blade, I mean, it's a perfect set up, your hands are wet, you have something sharp in them, there's a sink....OK, now I'm scarring myself....

Thanked: 1212Good for you that you managed to shave as soon as possible after the accident. That is the best way for dealing with it. My cousin once had a tragic car accident (her best friend died in it). The trauma psychologist that came to talk to her, said in was imperative for her to drive a car as soon as possible, at least if she planned on ever driving one again. Dropping a straight is no car accident, of course, but still I think the same principles apply.
Hope the thumb heals real soon,
best regards,
Bart.

I was a bit surprised to hear that your hands are wet when shaving. I always keep both as dry as possible. For my razor hand, a dry hand gives a better grip and prevents water from getting into the pivot. For my non-razor hand, the dryness means I can get a better stretch on my face.
I think you should always keep both hands dry and soap free as much as possible.

Sorry to hear about the hand, good to hear your razor is ok. I slipped up this morn half way through a great shave and put a nice gash in my cheek, one I am sure will scar.
