Thanked: 13245One Pass Challenge !!!!
So just how close do your edges shave????
On one pass ????
It was something I was asking myself and I have started testing mine...
I have been doing only one pass WTG no more, just to see how good it really is...
I have learned quite a bit in just 1 week
If you are not BBS obsessed then this might be for you...
I only look for straights to do two things for me:
1. I want comfort
2. I want nice neat straight lines around my beard
That is not a lot to ask, so I started only doing one pass, I am getting nice close comfortable shaves that last till I get home from work... Not BBS on my neck which has always been my problem area but more than acceptable in fact WTG it is BBS when I run my finger over it and just a touch of stubble running ATG...
So are you ready to see just how sharp your edges really are????

I have noticed that with some of my razors ... not all... I could get by with the one pass. What stops me is that I love the warm lather on the badger out of the moss scuttle so much. If it wasn't for that I might be satisfied with one pass.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I find that my extra hollow ground blades do give a more then acceptable shave in one pass. They do better then I remember the cartridge razors doing. As a rule, my antique wedges and choppers do not do as well.

Thanked: 171I've actually been using the WTG pass on my cheeks to tell just how sharp my blades are lately. It's helped me a lot with my honing. I never realized just how close you could get with one WTG pass until I started paying attention. With a single WTG pass on my cheeks, using some of mantic's "gillette slides" for those of you who know what that is, it's kind of like scything, I can get very very close shaves. Not BBS, but darn close. With duller razors, I can't get nearly as close with that single pass. I'm now in the habit of feeling how close it is after the WTG pass and I can determine how sharp the razor is just from that feel. It's helping me be able to determine what I've gained or lost from each different hone and/or paste. I've been finishing up with an ATG pass anyway just for that BBS feel, but it's not necessary for looks unless I'm worried about how long the look lasts.
My neck is a little different. The grain goes from the adams apple completely horizontal to the ear side, so a WTG pass isn't really possible. One XTG pass, straight N-S, with an ATG gillette slide / scythe (toward my adams apple) gets it damn close there as well. As close as I've gotten anyway. The same way a direct WTG pass isn't possible, it seems a direct ATG isn't either, so the slide/scythe is the closest I can get to ATG on the neck, and when done properly does leave it BBS.

I am in. I know that my Geo. W. Korn will give a great 1 pass.
I do a 1/4 pass to clean up.

Thanked: 3795For the sake of speed, I usually only do a singe pass and get a perfectly adequate shave in seven minutes total--lather, strop, and shave. About the only time I do more is if I notice I missed a spot. When I'm shave testing razors, which seems to be happening more often lately, I do both a WTG and ATG pass.
