I shaved as a young man in my late teens but college was too much of a distraction. Didn't shave much then anyway. I've always HATED shaving.

Started straight shaving again one year ago and loved it as much this morning as I did last summer. For me, lots of factors are involved: tradition (2 of my rotation of 3 are my dad's old razors), the scents of the soaps, bay rum, the satisfaction of bringing a razor to "shave ready" and getting a shave far closer than I could expect from a disposable blade, and the all-important quest for the elusive "perfect shave".

    Wish my beard grew faster.

Even when I get mundane, a good shave makes the day!

Guys who are on here saying they dont have time, means they really aren't into it, I have to be at work early and I "MAKE" time to shave with a straight everyday. I never feel like I need to rush because to me this is "my time" and I make sure to enjoy every minute, hell I'm married with a kid, and my wife like all wives loves the bathroom, so I figure if I got to shave everyday for my job I might as well damn enjoy it, and I SURE DO. Thank god for straights...man's second best invention (the automobile, I love my car).

    cheers

So many razors, so many hones, so many great fragrances and still so much to learn.............

Yeah, but how will you feel after you've been at it for a while?

    Mundane ....

Well if you ever feel it does then go a couple days without a shave and grab a disposable, Mach III or whatever the best is supposed to be now and give it a go. Faster, yea, smooth at first, yea, but you will see its just not the same. I dont mean just the Zen part of shaving with a straight but the overall results. You just dont get that sweet close shave you do with a straight... its like a straight almost cuts below the surface of your whiskers.
For the easiest and most convincing test, though hard to wait, is to go a few days and let the growth really come in thick and then shave with a straight. AMAZING how that razor just takes it off with 1 clean sweep ! No crap built up in the razor and having to clean out the blades after each stroke. It lets you focus on the shaving and not the razor.
And with a straight you will find razor burn is a thing of the past. I find that it is rare I will feel any burn at all when using the old 444 Alum Block after my shave.
Add all that up and I the mundane thing to do is use a disposable

I started three years ago and before that was a mach 3 man. I realized a year into straight shaving that I still had the old mach 3 in my bathroom. When I dug it out to see what condition it was in, the mach 3 blade had rusted through. That's when I tossed it and I haven't looked back since. In my short experience, the only mundane part has been waiting for my beard to grow.

    Cheers!

When I posted this question, I anticipated answers like yours, but of course, you've added so many interesting comparisons and thoughts. Fun reading! Thanks.

To answer my own question: I can't imagine it will ever become mundane. There will be days, but a great shave will always boost my day, have me stroking my face, and trying to get a whiff of my aftershave/cologne. I've taken an interest in scents, soaps and all the appurtenances to shaving that I gave no thought to. I now smell the flowers. Oh, it also led me here and to the kinship of fellow enthusiasts! Almost brings a tear....

Good shaving and best to all

It is never mundane! I love the fact that it takes skill and technique to get great results. Also, there is more than one way to achieve success with straight shaving.

It also feels great that I have all the tools I need to shave for the rest of my life and I am helping the environment get rid of 40 years worth of disposable shaving cartridges.
