Finally got a little bottle of Barbacide yesterday.

The store didn't have the small 16oz bottles so I got a 64oz one. Should last for ever because I have to add about 1 capful to an old coffee mug so I can soak just the blade and maybe halfway up the jimps. I might try soaking my old razors so the tip if the scales go in to, I can soak the whole blade that way - tang, pin - everything but there are so many different scale materials I don't know if I would prove anything really.

I didn't get it because I wanted a new razor but It seemed a great throw away to practice honing on.

I have been told that they have wonky blades and a terrible edge so if I can practice and get a good edge on a Gold Dollar, I reckon I might be able to do it on anything.

Apart from all that, I also understand that if a good edge is put on a Gold Dollar that it is half decent steel and holds an edge quite well.

If I get it right I might just use it to pay it forward for someone that just needs something to keep them going while they send their only razor out.

It's also a great price to unpin, repin, change scales, center blade and all the other resto stuff that needs something to practice on.

Just be sure to make a fresh solution each time you need to disinfect

For sure, I won't need to use it often, just when I buy or even one day sell a razor so it should keep me going for years.

I believe your old adjustable Gillette is a Slim. Very versatile razor being an adjustable.

Ummm, I attended a metallurgy class at Howard Clarks Morgan Valley Forge a few years ago.
We dissected a few of the GD's, Re-heat treated a few then broke them before and after the heat treat.
The conclusion was that they are not properly heat treated from the factory. They have a very large grain size and they are to soft. That's why they will not hold an edge for long. We found that if we heat treated them then the grain size became much smaller and the steel harder. Of course that destroyed the edge ( it became a potato chip shaped edge, very wavy).
So, do not expect the edge to last for very long. You will get a lot of practice rehoning it.

Yep, spot on Bob. When I don't have the time or I'm not in the mood for a straight razor shave, the slim does a fine job. I really like having the options of its adjusting mechanism.

Yep, I honed one once and got four decent shaves. The fifth shave ended this experiment. Utopian got eleven shaves from one.

    Good luck!
