We dissected a few of the GD's, Re-heat treated a few then broke them before and after the heat treat.
The conclusion was that they are not properly heat treated from the factory. They have a very large grain size and they are to soft. That's why they will not hold an edge for long. We found that if we heat treated them then the grain size became much smaller and the steel harder. Of course that destroyed the edge ( it became a potato chip shaped edge, very wavy).
So, do not expect the edge to last for very long. You will get a lot of practice rehoning it.
    Thank you for that information.

Like you said, I will get practice re-honing it which was one of the reasons I got it, and to practice unpinning and re-scaling etc.

It seemed like something ideal to practice with for 6 bucks, I didn’t plan to add it to my rotation.

I did think it might have been worth giving to someone as a backup though.

Good, I wrote the post to help you get a better understanding of what the GD's are and are not. I am pleased that we are now on the same page.
    Best of luck to you.

    My 11/16 - 1/4 hollow - Barbers Notch - W.T Staniforth , Sheffield arrived yesterday.

It's in excellent condition, not a mark on the blade or scales.

I can't wait to to take it for a run later today.

    Definitely a keeper I think.

    Next on my wish list:

A soviet Stiz factory 1963 razor. Raketa made to commemorate Uri Gagarin the first man in space (cosmonaut). It has a Rocket emblem on the scales

I would also love faux pearl scales and faux tortoise.

Decided to stop buying everything cheap that I see and lookout for better stuff so I will eventually have a good collection.

Although good stuff that's cheap is even better.

I still have a GD coming from China but thats only to practice honing and to take apart to learn rescaling and re-pinning. Course I will have to shave with it to see if its honed properly but it won't ever be in my rotation I'm sure.

If you are done with inexpensive stuff and are looking for some top end gear you may want to see some of the items in the classifieds, there are some nice items in there.

Thanks, I will be taking some serious notice after Christmas.

On the upside though, at least I have some cheap stuff that I can pay forward after I have finished practising my honing skills on.

I finally broke down and ordered an 8x3 Zulu Grey-at 50% off and free shipping, I didn't really have a choice lol! I hear they can take weeks to arrive. Meanwhile, TC sent me his to play with. I think I'm going to test the Zulu versus my Greek Vermio on two identical Torreys to see which one wins.

Jerry-What brand are those 1,2 and 4k hones?
