The main thing I don't like about those kinds of heaters in a cold garage is the amount of moisture that is put in the air and then it condenses on your cold tools etc. and can rust them if you are not careful.

I bet the kerosene puts a lot less moisture in the air then propane. I use to have a propane one that I used to put under the engine in my cat to get it to start if it was very cold out. The propane one kicked out crazy moisture.

I have a bigger version that does not take long to take the chill-out of my 3000 sq ft.
I have always run diesel in them as kerosine is cost-prohibitive.
Dries a damp shop fast too. The newer 'clean' diesel does not hardly stink at all.
Some ventilation is key I think.

I tried to look it up quick and couldn't find a definite answer. I think they are both high moisture. Lots of metal things in my garage and to keep them from rusting I find that the metal has to warm up enough to evaporate the moisture that condenses on them. For a short term project under 4 hours I will deal with the cold rather than the moisture.

Everything’s bigger in Texas of course. Har.
I was surprised how odourless it is on farm diesel though, like Tom said.
And yes, you need to let things get warm to get dry but once the garage is up to temp it’s easy to maintain.
I’ve insulated all around the roof flashing and the walls were already insulated when I bought. Left the roof vents exposed only and yeah it gained 50’ in half an hour so it’ll totally allow for winter car work.
Makes smoking outside more bearable too in the sub temps.

Around here the farm diesel is dyed red {Do they do the same up north?} I wonder if they add an aromatic compound with the dye?

A torpedo heater is certainly not a perfect system but usable.

Don't point one to close at the plastic grill of a motor vehicle to warm it up though!!!!

Tim, I believe that the red dye is standard everywhere here in the USA.

Farm diesel isn't given any 'Road Tax' as it's only 'Supposed' to be used in machines that aren't used on the roads, such as tractors, combines etc.

However there are some people who will use the off road diesel in their diesel trucks, cars that do drive on the roads.

My brother was working for a farmer and all of the farmers pickups were diesel powered. My brother was heading to a chemical plant to pick up some supplies when he was pulled over by an unmarked car. He got out and he saw that the guys in the car weren't 'regular cops'. They identified themselves as being from some federal agency and they showed him a piece of paper that allowed them to check his tank to see if it was running off road diesel.

He allowed them and they ran some kind of tester down the fill pipe and once removed he was allowed to leave as his boss only used Road Diesel.

A man I knew from work has a huge farming operation and he once told me that the cost for diesel for his machines during harvest cost him over $6000.00 Per Month! And that's without any Road Tax!

    Ours is red as well.

And no worries. The car I’m fixing is older than plastic.
