Noid
Anyone remember Donino's Pizza's Noid?
What did I get in the mail today? I was expecting this--
But instead I got the Noid!
I'd had it sent to Benz as he has access to a wonderful clock maker as I was sure it would only need a good cleaning and oiling.
However he tells me that apparently the seller didn't pad the inside of the clock's case and that there were only two screws holding the mechanism instead of the four and when the box was dropped or handled rough those two screws pulled out and let it all flop around.
Not only is the once beautiful face damaged but the chime bars and the shaft that holds the wheels that control the chimes.
I could live with having the damaged clock face repaired and Benz tells me that as far as he can see, all of the pivot points have new bushing installed and they don't appear to be worn at all.
It will all depend on what the seller wants to do.
Damn! It was such a beautiful clock and it had Westminster Chimes--this is from a different clock, but the chimes should be about the same. Skip forward to 0:25

The seller said that she couldn't believe how much damage there was but also how USPS can mess up contents but she did admit that she 'Probably' should have used packing inside the case to protect the mechanism. 'Probably' Duhhhhh
Benz offered to send pics of the shipping box as it doesn't have a mark, dent, scratch etc in it. But without proper padding that package would have gone through some rough handling.
Many, many times I've been at the PO and watched as my and other's packages are just tossed through an opening to a cart to be taken to the next stage.
I forget all of the questions that are ALWAYS ASKED at the PO with Every Package but one of them is; Is there anything fragile included. I guess the seller didn't consider a clock made at least 85 years old 'Fragile'.
Still waiting to hear from the seller. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 250I have no doubt Roy that my buddy can fix it. He's a certified watch maker.......the only guy I trust my watches, clocks, and even my L.S. Starrett dial indicators with.

Ya gotta know when you pack an item such as that clock, that it needs special protection both inside and out.
I hope for your sake that the seller makes good and everything works out.

I know how much you trust his work and how highly qualified your watchmaker buddy is. The work on my pocket watch shows it.
I believe it cost me about $155 to have him fix that pocket watch but he insisted that you not only pack it very well but to have it insured for at least $350---
'IF' the seller and I can work something out and he does the repair, I'm envisioning him insisting not only having the clock very well packed but sending it with $1000's worth of insurance--

Mantle Clock Update
The seller has refunded the purchase price. I wasn't a hard ass and offered to absorb the $30 shipping charge 'IF' she would just refund the purchase price.
I've given Benz the Green Light to take what's left of what once was a very beautiful mantle clock to the watchmaker for an estimate to bring it back to life.
While that face plate was damaged, it's rather unique as the numbers are raised and finding another one like it isn't probably feasible.
I can't say for sure, but I'd bet that she's learned a lesson on how to pack/wrap/ship something as fragile as a vintage mantle clock. At least I do hope so.Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

A PAIR OF SHEFFIELDS
A couple of razors I recently received.
First a D.C. HALSTED I got from Bouschie. About 6/8th with a fine, even bevel and plenty of nice patina. Scales have wear n tear but the blade has only very light hone wear. Good shaver.
Next a JAMES JOHNSON Cast Steel. 6/8. Probably my favourite style of blade right now. A lovely flowing smile with no stabilizer at the heel and a fine-ish grind. This is one of those razors that is just fun to use.
Put both razors to my Okudo green asagi. Full Asano nagura progression then a super fine Nakayama tomo followed by water only. Very keen and smooth edges.Last edited by Tathra11; 02-10-2020 at 01:12 AM.

CHECK ME, CHECK ME!!!
I was really only interested in the Henry Sears Queen 7/8 and the Packwood Old English and I made an offer accordingly. Put the offer in for one day and within a minute and a half it was accepted.
