Thanked: 4827Ok. There are some crazy air rifles out there. Now all I need is some affordable night vision optics and I can kill raccoons and rats all night long. They are both a serious pest around here. As far as raccoons go we have really big raccoons, no closed season, no bag limit. The only thing that gets tricky around here is discharging a firearm after dark. I doubt the pellet guns qualify as firearms.

I'd check you local laws. Here in Walla Walla even pellet rifles are considered firearms and can't be discharged within the city limits With that said, I taught all three of my kids how to shoot in our back yards with an air gun.
While this isn't what my youngest brother uses, he does use a light that attaches to his rifle to hunt coyotes at night--just a thought--

Thanked: 3226Looks like any air/pellet gun that has a greater muzzle velocity and/or greater muzzle energy than specified requires a Possession and Acquisition licence (PAL) to buy or possess.

Wow. Mine is .177 and 875fps and plenty adequate. I have found those 1000fps and over need high-dollar pellets or the shot just goes wild half the time.
I saw where the Chinese are selling a night vision you snap your smartphone on. Hooboy!

I have the 177 cal. RWS. ( German made ). Chrono'ed @
1275 fps. Likes a couple different pellets, kills about anything in proper distance and shot placement, when it comes to varmits. ( ground bigs, rabbits, squirrel, possibly coyote's ). @ 35 yrds. I killed a squirrel with a head shot, found the pellet just under the skin above the opposite shoulder of impact. So I can imagine what a .22 cal would be capable of doing.Mike

Thanked: 3226Any air guns firing at over about 500 fps requires you to take a course and write a test with a pass to get a PAL permit up here to own one or even borrow one. So virtually any air gun with enough power to seriously consider hunting anything with is regulated.
There are sizing dies for pellets the help make them more uniform and that may help make them more accurate, especially with the higher velocity air guns.
