I beg to differ--I am not one serious home baker--I am one who loves to try things to play with and not to my bank accounts advantage

We raise soft grain wheat which I believe are best suited for flour to make things like cookies and cakes. However even those store bought flours have the bran taken out.

This instructions for the grain mill states that it won't grind flour as fine as commercial grinders can. I have some local wheat and also a bit of hard red wheat that was shipped to me from a friends farm. He also sent some dried corn that just landed yesterday.

What I've decided to do is grind enough of our local soft white wheat to make a bit over 3 cups and then grind enough of my buddies hard red wheat to make a bit over 1 cup as my recipe for a loaf of 'Sandwich' bread calls for 4 cups. I think I'll run both through the mill once again and then use a sifter to remove any extra coarse bits.

As those of us old enough to remember--------------

Hell, Shaun, I’m 50 and don’t get it. Looks like a gov’t civil warning beacon but guessing maybe it’s the lead in to a commercial for something.

    Roy? Help us ‘tweeners out.

I was just kidding. I know what it is. Not because I’m much older than you, but I have lived in remote areas without cable. It’s a test pattern. When the tv programming was finished for the day, typically midnight, that is what was broadcast until five when the early morning news came on.

I remember seeing that. It was used as a space filler so you didn't have to look at snow on the screen.

BTW, I always wondered what you would hook to the front of those mixers. Now I know.

Duh, old-school TV test pattern. The ones I recall from the '70s living in Houston -- as in trying to stay up for SNL -- were much more colorful for the 3 VHF and 2 UHF channels (or, was that vice versa...too lazy to search up the VHF vs UHF info) we received.

The patterns I saw also lacked an Native American chief caricature and the random lottery numbers. Roy's looks like the style used for the "Fallout" line of video games. Very nostalgic in a cold war* sort of way.

    * Pairs well with Brutalist architecture.

I remember watching the test patterns and listening to the CBC end of broadcast day sign off by Lorne Green (Pa Cartwright was a Canadian). There is a CBC tv blooper disc in which he really blew it by saying something like, “Thank you for watching and good night from the Canadian Broadcorping Castration.” Almost peed myself when I first heard that.

I have had one of those mixers for over 40 years. I lost the cover for the power take off about 25 years ago and haven’t bothered to replace it. I have used the meat grinder attachment, the pasta extruded and sausage stuffer. They have now been passed on to my daughter who has the more recent incarnation of the machine since she realized she won’t get mine until I pass this mortal coil. That machine will surely survive me.

Happy grinding/baking. Make sure you post pics of your first grain to final product results.

My good buddy always bakes his own bread and has the Hobart branded version of that mixer before Kitchenaid purchased them.

Pretty sure the originals were built as solid as a Sherman tank.

Tom and I worked out a Livi 8/8+ / Chandler 9/8 trade to compare some big guns!

This will be my first razor over well over 8/8 in size. My Livi is fractionally wider than 8/8.
