A heads up . Your Nagura's CAN scratch your Nakayama. Dont ask how I know. I wet the bottom of my Nagura and make a slurry with a DMT drip that on to your Nakayama.
Your only as good as your last hone job.

what are the small pieces used for? Seams like they are too small to be useful.

They are nagura. Work on the base stone to make it lower grits so essentially gives me 3 grit ranges before using the stone by itself.

Those little stones are the same type that Samuri warriors used on their swords to ensure a clean cut at the neck.
I have the same ones from Garret and they are a game changer in skilled hands. I thought the same as you. Now I wouldnt trade mine for the world. It makes a system Naguras & Nakayama's that currently are on par with Escher. Coticule. Zulu Grey. But on steroids, and fast food quick. Rock solid repeatable results. A little stone thrown by David killed Goliath. Dont think of them as a slurry stone, they impart a grit particle that imparts its own metal removal and polish at a smaller micron that other current naturuals

Mentioned some time back that my barber had one of these as his first razor when he started out 40 years ago and it was somehow lost.
Well hopefully I can clean this up and surprise him with a shave ready piece of nostalgia.
Maybe get a free hot shave out of it.
