I believe you can scrub them gently with a green scotch brite like you use for dishes but don't lap them. I could be wrong but this is my memories from reading on here.

Had a chance to take a drive through the countryside of New Hampshire today, stopping at some antique stores in the towns along the way. Beautiful drive, mid-summer, mountains, lakes - gorgeous. Didn't find much in the stores but passed by a couple different "barn-type" sales, did a quick U-turn and went in. These barn sales pop up around here and it's usually just one guy's accumulated junk that he now wants gone.

Found a couple coticules the drawer of a toolbox in one barn. Walked past the toolbox once and then went back and decided to check the drawers. Bingo. The one that's pretty flat has a few hairline cracks in the surface and the one that's worn is a natural combo.

Then at a different sale I found this little hone that looks and feels like it might be an old thuringian. There's dried slurry caked on it that feels right, and the part that's not caked with slurry has the "skin" that comes with age. This one was also in a drawer, gotta check all the drawers, check everywhere!

These barn-sale guys didn't care much about sharpening stones. They let them go for just a few bucks each. I'll get them cleaned and lapped this weekend and see what I've got.

Got the hones from yesterday lapped. Two good and very different coticules. The one with all the wear on it is flat now but the poor little fella is only almost 3/8 inch thick now. I think I will bond it to a piece of BBW I have that's missing the coti part. Construction adhesive?

I love places like that to "shop" around in. Takes me way too long though.

I used T-88 epoxy on my Coti to BBW, then sanded the edges till clean and even, once dried.

Yeah that guy has 'em packed in there for sure. I bet they haven't moved in years and years. Then it's hand saws around the corner there.

Thanks, I kept an eye out for your Douglas hammer but could not find one for you. You would think that would be the spot if any, but no dice.
