I'll be in amongst the crowd who says I don't know everything. Even what I do know, or merely more sure of, is generally self-reviewed before posting, because I know my limitations. I'll be happy to send anyone along to one of my mentors if you run me out of stuff to know.

I'm really grateful for several on this forum, some not yet labeled as mentors, who have been helping me figure out razors. It was a part of cutlery that I had not paid attention to during the study of steel. That is being remedied in acceptably mutual fashion as such a relationship should.

That someone sees fit to call me a mentor, well, thanks. That I do not identify myself as one is safer. That I wasn't working to cross some magic line makes this even more precious.

    Or am I missing soemting?

It should be fixed now. The same rules should apply as in the rest of the forum. This problem was caused by the fact that announcements was staff-only in the past. I changed it to allow announcements discussion to take place in the announcement thread itself. The edit setting was not changed then. However, now it should be fine.

Someone once asked Chuck Norris if he found that wherever he went he had to constantly prove himself to everybody. Every time he went into a bar was there some bad ass dude who was going to prove he was some Hollywood Star and nothing more.

His reply was that number one when he's out he keeps a very low profile and he is never trying to prove anything to anybody and the very few times he was ever called out he was usually able to diffuse the situation in a peaceful manner. The very few times he had to defend himself he did it in the most conservative manner possible.

I would apply this to our mentor system. Some guys who have a lot of knowledge and who sit back and give conservative advice where they think it would be helpful and guys who aren't trying to prove anything to anyone. Their reputation speaks for them.

As far as worries about marginalizing other members that's ridiculous. No one whether newbie or advanced is going to just accept what any one member says as the gospel truth. I would dare say even when Lynn gives honing advice people will evaluate it and use it as they see fit.

You gotta have faith guys and give the system a fair chance.

    My thoughts exactly!

Bruno, Lee, do I really have to share the stage with the likes of utopian and jimmyHAD?

Did the rep dots not work?

I am not so sure. Surely, the only way to gain the rep dots would be to either have thanked posts, conversation or otherwise, the ability to portray your opinion properly is important, or because people added to your rep.

I am not sure why this system should be deemed a failure, especially as it offered the ability for the popular majority to give you negative reputation, as well as positive. This system, currently, seems to provide a lot of one way traffic. Am I to assume those who contribute nothing, have a nasty manor or constantly give poor advice will be labeled as such?

I guess I hope I am useful in some capacity, it is just a shame that the progression up reputation wise has transformed from a steady progression to one day you opinion is valid, to the next you are part of a group who's opinion is considered particularly important to note.

The ambiguity, I suppose, is my personal issue.

I sincerely hope and am pretty sure that the new system of badges will be a benefit to the site. We (Supermods, Admins, Mods) are working very hard to protect the original vision of this site. I for one am honored by those who accept the position of mentor. Further, I believe their work, and indeed the work of any who mentor on this site, is some of the most important work to be done.

Thanks to all our new mentors, and I look forward to many more mentors to come!

Just my 2 cents but FWIW I feel that the members who were picked to be mentors up to this point were exactly the right ones.I've not been a member for long, but I recognize the helpfulness of these particular members.
