First commute of the year done. 20 miles. Going to top 3000 miles this year if all goes to plan. Pretty good considering 18 months ago I probably hadn't touched a bike in twenty years and has done about no exercise in the same period.

Good for you and congratulation! I also had a 7 year hiatus from the bike before I got back to it and commuting 25 miles round trip. Took me 3 month to get used to it. Now, after 3 years, 30lb lighter, I wouldn't change it for a thing.

Keep it up, the health and mental benefits are incredible! Congratulations again!

a group of us used to ride all the old fourwheeler trails we had on our BMX type bikes .. i had a nice Mongoose (back when they were not so mass produced)with the aluminum wheels that had the drilled out spots to take away some weight !!! i think this summer i will pick up a new bike and get back in shape !!!

did see this monster the other day ! the kids and i kinda laughed !!
    4" wide tires !!

Ha! I was really big into BMX too. Even did a little racing. My sister had a Mongoose with the same wheels with anodized blue inserts.
I would like to get a newish mountain bike- my current bike was made in 1998.

Surly "Rat Ride" 1X1 limited edition. 4" Large Marge tires on 24" rims give the same height as a 26" wheel. Only 1X1 built without canti studs to allow for tire clearance.

    I'd love to try that!

My bike has 29" rims with 2.1" wide tyres. Stick that on a 23" frame and I'm left with an intimidating bike.

The photo in post # 127 above is the stock rat ride with slicks. I put some knobbies on it and have ridden the trail with the big 'uns. It is cool but I built a set of 650B wheels with 2.3s on it. Rides great. I also have a 29er but prefer the 650B. The acceleration and handling of a 26er without the sluggishness/cumbersomeness in the tight and twisties of a 29er. Of course that may just be my 66 year old body. If I had more power maybe the 29er would be the equal of the 650B, but I don't think so.

At 6' 4" I guess I'm built right for the 29er. I've never had any issues with it being cumbersome, I think the improvements in frame geometry in the last few years have really sorted the bugs.
