thing I have noticed is a lot of these new bikes are now coming with disc brakes !! I didn't really dig into the details yet but I noticed the disc and it marked on the tag .. anyone running them on there bikes or is this just a gimmick to sell ???
Disc brakes have been pretty much standard on higher end mountain bikes for a decade or so. Now I hear that they are starting to put them on road bikes as well. They are way better than V-brakes, side pulls, or centerpulls in wet weather. In the dry I don't think it makes that much difference, but in wet it definitely does.

I prefer mechanical discs to 'juicy' (hydraulic) brakes because they are easier to work on, and to switch from one bike to another should you take a notion to do that. IME.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Discs are good. Especially if you plan to ride trails. I'm about to upgrade mine to a hydraulic system for the increased stopping power on muddy down hills.

It's worth speaking to a local bike shop and setting if they will allow you to test ride. As with everything there are some that love discs and some don't.

my latest roadside find, a 3 speed hub geared indi 500. I invested $8 in a new tube for the back wheel (it would be wouldn't it, I had to disconnect the hub gears to change it , gave the chain a clean and lube, wiped off the worst of the dirt and it was done.
even the bars and saddle were set up correctly for me.
it is my "riding with Imogen" bike, my daughter has just learned to ride independently without training wheels etc so this bike is perfect for cycle paths, I don't need to worry about it getting stolen and if it does, even if I put new tyres onto it I will only be in to it for about $40.

it is a shame that all of the chrome has rusted but I might clean it up and paint it silver maybe - probably not
