Very interesting,is not the lead per/say,but the oxides that form.

That is my conclusion as well. It seems that 'Lemur' was correct in what he said about 'lead oxide' being the effective culprit. Give it a try "Pixelfixed"...I think you might be surprised. I am!

Kind of like how I do not understand how water can wear a hole in granite just be dripping on it?

    Cool UPDATE...

    Hey All...

Just thought I would throw this update out there for any that still might be interested about the "Griffon Strop Aide." I've been using this strop tool on all of my shavers for over a month now with great success, and I have noticed a couple of things (other than the excellent quality of the shaves):

    1. When I rub this on a linen strop it gives the strop a light 'Grey' color or hue. After a couple of days the strop turns white again....my conclusion is that the lead residue left on the strop oxidizes rapidly and turns white. Interesting...

    2. Secondly I took a razor that was finished on a Nakayama JNAT. It had the typical JNAT 'hazy shine' on the bevel. After about 40 laps on the 'leaded' linen strop the bevel had been polished up almost to a 'mirror bevel' shine. So my conclusion is that this 'Strop Aide' definitely acts as a polishing compound and is removing minute scratches. Thus the 'smoother (or cooler) shave...

    I like it!

Anyway..."that's my story and I'm sticking to it!"

That makes sense about the whitening of the lead. I have seen references in old blacksmith texts about leadsmiths being referred to as "Whitesmiths".
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.
