How about using an old refrigeration compressor for a cheap pump? The main problem I could see is volume/time.

For a home/hobby rig I think this would work.

Have used old piston type compressors and one lung gas engines driven by electric motors and ported to suit the use. A diaphragm types will not draw a high enough vacuum. Also HF one and two stage compressors work. Just have a way to cut off the vessel or that vacuum will suck the oil out of the compressor
A good thing to have is an intermediate vessel to catch any over flow.

This website has a lot of good information on vacuum use when you go through it. It is a gener4al information site not only dictating wood stabilization.

The refrig compressors will work. I have had several over the years with a fitting soldered to the suction port for A/C work.
A good one will pull 30, albeit not nearly as fast as the vane type I have now.

Definitely have to follow specific protocol.
Before turning off the vacuum pump, always close the valve between the pump and the cylinder, otherwise the vacuum will suck the lubricating oil out of the vacuum pump back into the cylinder.
Also, the vapors, from what I've been told that come out of the pump (with normal operation) are combustible.
When vacuuming oils, the latent heat of vaporization drops lower and so flammable vapors can come from the substance in that cylinder.
I don't know about the stabilizing agents, and the properties of..
I'm guessing a ventilated area is best.

Ya.....A pair of vice-grips clamped on the suction hose works well.

I've done the vice-grip trick on brake hoses on cars and airlines on big truck many a time.

I've spent the last 2 nights honing. Getting my collection up to snuff. I'm getting closer to the end but it's still a ways away. I keep finding lots of chips and dings I missed when I first started honing. It's becoming a bigger job than I thought!

    Finished another for MikeT.
Just a bit of cleaning around the pivot area of the tang, a quick ironing, a swim in some hair dye, and a soak in neatsfoot oil. Pinned with brass pins and original collars.

I've also have his Ebro, ready for assembly. But I'm waiting on Mike to decide if he likes the letters in silver, or if I need to change them to gold.

What do you all think..? Of course, brass pins n collars.

    Nice work!

About the colors for the letters--looks like originally it was silver or perhaps while I vote for the silver.
