The handle will get a coat of wax. The outer layer is very hard, dense material and there isn’t much porosity to that part.
Some fine antler you have there!
I can imagine though that the smell must be fairly bad in the microwave, my wife would attack like a savage beast if I used her kitchen..
Looking forward to seeing progress pics!

I have a love / hate relationship with wootz.
When something doesn't go right and the pattern is vague and dark for some reason, I hate it with a passion.
But when the pattern turns out great... I LOVE it.
When it kicks my ass, and I hate it, I sometimes ask myself: why do I keep doing this instead of doing something easy like damascus. But then I remind myself that I do it -because- it is difficult and I love the challenge. :)
Lookin' good Bruno.
During my ride last summer when I was at Randy's in MN he gave me a brush made from elk horn. However it's a bit different. Seems there is a place that raises elk for commercial meat sales and to help prevent the males from harming each other their horns are cut off at the base. So when the shed all they drop are the stubs.
If I'm not mistaken this stub had been on the ground for several years. Here's the brush.

Wade and Butcher faux frame back. A little 1k w/d to help lessen the “restoration “ work from someone else. You can just make out the HOLLOW GROUND etch. I think with a little more sanding with a hard block will help it pop. The scales were fairly warped but some strategic shimming and a heat gun they’re nice and straight. Had to bang around the pins a bit to get it to close center.

I'm probably going to take this apart and redo it to reduce thick scales, and I'm not sure that I like the Dewsnap blade it in it. At least I am finally working with the pressed horn. Still trying to perfect the process of making it, but each time I think that I have figured out what went wrong last time, something proves me wrong. Almost have a new design or three in the works, but it will be a while before I get them made. Should prove interesting.
