Thanks Mike-Obviously the CA will go as glossy as you want to get. I've been playing around with CA finishes lately; jury's still out on whether or not I like 'em. I seem to recall you hated CA finishes?
Its easy to do, but I had 3 outta five that the finish looks like a shattered car window. It took several months to happen, so I'm presuming it had to do with expanding and contracting, or the flexing of the scales.
I have used minwax, polycrylic finishes. It dries clear, and several coats can be put in in one day.

Also in the lot was this Ern Chromstahl. As you can see, cel rot hits stainless just as hard.

It is a shame about the Ern. I'm going to save as much of it as I can. Mainly because of the etching on it advertising being made with Krupp stainless steel. And of course Krupp has quite a bit of history, both good and really bad.
The wedge intrigue me as well. No obvious maker but has the VR stamp. It will need new scales as the extremely dry and cracked bone crumbled apart the moment I started taking them off.Attachment 308998
Im with Mike on the finishes. But Ive not had the issues with CA. But I find it a real PITA to do. Putting on a couple coats and sanding and doing it over and over and over. Using thin to start with for the first two or three coats then going to the medium CA. After you got 15 to 20 coats on and sanded down over and over you get a great finish.
Ive used the spray on clear coats on larger projects as it goes on smoother. More evan and sanding is less work because you do thin coats. Ive done the polycrylic too like Mike. I didnt like it. It didnt seem to dry as hard.
This letter opener stand is Purple Heart with Tru-oil. Its still purple, just darker.

BTW, back in the early 90s i lived in MO. The salt was horrible in winter. Cars with rusted away fenders were standard then. I dont know if they still use it. Here they use Mag. Cloride. (Sp), it eats all your wiring. Not sure its any better than salt but THEY say it is.
