Well as predicted I was overly busy this summer (way too much overtime, thought my wife was going to kill me)
But my nephew got interested in straight razors after he inherited his grandfathers straight anice WB. He showed it to me and it was in nice condition with just a bit of surface rust, unfortunately some on the edge near the toe but he asked me if I could clean it up and hone it for him. Well that was really the ONLY project I managed to do this summer (well that and paint 2 doors in the house) I can tell you it cleaned up real nice, I didn't remove the scales even. He went back to uni on the 25th and I gave it back to him on the 23rd. Along with a board strop, some williams mug soap/Lord shave cream (he inherited a brush as well) I also bought a GD hoping to hone it and give it to so he could rotate. I was thinking this should be cheap and easy as I already have a GD and never saw the bad stuff people were talking about. Well I learned 2 things.
1: Many people here are wiser than myself
2: I finally understand what people mean when they say the geometry is all off.
Needless to say I didn't get it honed for him, perhaps Ill try again some day. fortunately it wasn't an expensive lesson :)
Unfortunately I forgot to take after pics but I think you can see from the befores there wasn't too much cleaning up to do

I am the interim Specialist at work (lots of paper work) while the regular one is on prolonged sick leave and I have a trainee and we are still short staff. The gold wash finally dried all the way through on this Blackwood scale so I took some time to sand up the logo with some 1500 grit micromesh.

A bit more sanding to do to pull the surplus gold out of the surrounding wood grain, but not too bad. The details in the sunburst were really close on the original image so I wasn't sure how the wood would hold up to that much focused laser energy in a small area.
Pretty pleased with the depth of detail around the symbol and script.
