Thaeris,,, how do you do that intricate work? Is it chemical etch or dremel, or divine intervention??
I am intimidated by engraving a smiley face, your work just blows me away.
Incredible stuff.

Lace of ivory from Dieppe, genuine tortoise, and silver pins. :)
This is an interesting custom project. the steel is SC145. Extremely pure steel with 1.45% carbon. It is very soft when annealed, and hard as glass when hardened. It's the same stuff that Ali uses. I bought it from Achim in Germany. My first blade with this I tried a clay coating, but I rushed the drying part and it fell off. I have to do some more experimenting with coatings. In the meantime, I wanted to have a differential heat treatment for this one, for 2 reasons: looks, and preventing warp.
This steel needs water quenching, and a full quench 'might' warp the blade some. I don't have much experience with water quenching yet so I wanted to play it safe. Instead of using a coating, I carefully dunked only about 3/8 of the blade in water to quench the edge. After 10 seconds or so, I pulled it out, and let the heat from the spine soak back in and temper the edge portion just right, and then I put it back in the water, but a little bit further.
I repeated this a couple of times. The result is clearly visible. Half the blade is hardened, and the spine is soft. And where the 2 meet each other, you can see the wavy, cloudy pattern. All in all I am very happy with how this turned out. I am really curious about what the hamon will look like and how visible it will be.
