Gasman, I think Euclid gives good counsel on the satin finish. I've spent quite a bit of time learning to do it (and still learning) and it's not easy but can turn out quite good. How many sanding hours are required to get to this point, and how often are you changing your paper. Assume you're starting at 400 grit and going all the way to 2500?

Here is my first attempt. Not too bad for a first try. Couldn't get a pic without shadow so I had to take two of each side. The pitting stands out pretty badly but its on the back side.

So its not going to hide pitting. Didn't really think it would. I used 600 grit with WD40 but started with 1500 grit and went down till I found what I liked. Will play some more and I think it will be fine in the end but the pitting is just going to have to stay. Dont want to take away from that part of the blade too much.

And I was gonna post this one, probably my best one. The first time trying it, and have yet to repeat it.
Just can't remember what I used when, when I did it. But I remember the blasted scotchbrite wheel.[emoji38]

Im going to try the scotch brighting next for comparison. I think i need to tone mine down just a touch. Thanks Mike. I did the stabilizer on one side and not on the other. Wasnt sure what would look better. Now that i looks at a few pics from others i think ill do the stabilizer along with the blade.
And Mihai, that handle looks very nice. You going to give it some color or leave it? Eather way it looks good.

I plan to try a stabilization with or without color, I think.
It's not the natural way but I'm trying to see what's coming out.

Thanks, Phrank, nice to hear it! There's more than one way to do it. For me the funny thing is, I've had good luck first taking the surface to a near mirror finish, then applying the satin finish to that. Sort of backwards, I know, but with the satin finish once I start going in one direction with the sanding it highlights any misaligned sanding marks from lower grits. If you are interested you can see an example in posts 33 and 37 of this thread http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...ml#post1670245 It was a somewhat overly ambitious hand-sanding project, turned out ok but looking back it was probably one that I could have left some pits and been happy too.
