Got mine in the mail today. About 1/4 of the top has rusted away so its about 1/8 inch lower than the rest of the top.
Question... can i grind away the top and make it all the same as the rusted part and then finish it? Or is the top smooth part different than whats underneath?

I can just clean up the smooth part and put some black paint on the other section, but im trying to get a feel as to what to do with it. I will get a pick tomorrow so you can see what i mean.

Considering Mike polished it you may want to avoid using it near really bright lights or risk permanent retina damage.

Hoping to get a piece of rail for an anvil this weekend. Fingers crossed.

Buy some of the Harbor Freight belts (both the 80 and 120 grit) and go to town. You might be surprised at how shallow the rust is.

Mine's on the back burner since the weather turned nice and I'm doing some riding on the bike, but I will finish mine up.

Id need to grind away about an 1/8 inch of steel to get it all at the same level as the rusted part. Then sand away until its all smoothed out. Im up for it if the only difference in the rusted away stepdown part is the rust. Hoping the smooth part on top that 8snt rusted down 8s not hardened any more than the rest of it.

I wont be making mine as pretty as the work Mike did, that for sure.

I think that you'll find that you'll be sanding less than you think.

Start with the 80 grit and get the 'rust' as you refer to it out then switch to the 120. Don't forget about the underside of the bench top belt sander to round things out.

Also---I doubt that the hardness is only an 1/8th of of inch deep.

Guess its not as deep as I thought. Just got home from work on a long Friday and its time for bed but I just had to snap a pic to show this.

This is the pic from eBay...

Guessing some good sanding should knock out the bad strip and make it all the same again. Its just going to take a bit of work to get the smooth side down to match the rough side, then work them both to a nice finish.

    Jerry,

Mine was rough all over, I started with a 60 grit belt.

Mine looked very similar to yours Jerry. As I said funds are low so I stopped working as I'd worn out all of my El Cheapo Belts; but I just got a bit of a perk so I'll be picking up some more HF belts and work on mine some more tomorrow.

I think something that might have been overlooked is that the seller is offering these chunks of RR Track as pieces of History and not for anvils.
