Thanked: 480Was not picking on "Nippon" in particular, but as far as "couidnt be happier" goes, It would sure make me happy if you would give me some of the excess cash you obviously must have laying around.

I think you'll end up just fine. Good razors should sell for a good price.
That being said, I snagged one of the best shavers I own -- a minty Carl Rob Schaaf "Remus" -- for $9.99. It's a great razor and should have sold for much more than that, IMO.~Rob~

I suppose I started the razors from Japan thing, but going back 5 or 6 years and Filly's and Friodurs were gold. Who knew there was such a reft of them in Japan along with all manner of other razors, Japanese included? I wonder why they all seem to be coming up all at once? Perhaps some new hygiene rules or something like that? Indeed, some have varying degrees of wear, yet some are like new.

Thanked: 480I don't think its anything changed over there as much as they came to the realization that "Hey, stupid americans are willing to give us lots of their money for these old tools that we no longer use for anything!"
Its hype. No more, no less. That, and people who just don't know any better. I have sold roughly a dozen Henks on the bay. And the price never went above 130 bucks for a near perfect shave ready razor. Recently, I got more money for some nice 17s but about 100 bucks less than comparable quality from Nippon, plus, my shipping didn't cost 20 bucks, and it was shave ready too boot. Seriously, when there are 8 vendors, selling 40 Frioudur 72s, how can they manage to hold a straight face when they use the word "Rare!" in the description? We cant see it, but I am pretty sure I hear them snickering into their yakatas all the way from here.

Old Japanese Barber Strops go for lots of dollars also. There must be something to the stupid American theory.

TBH, I have bought several razors and strops from Japan. All were as-described and I truly was glad to get them in the fine condition they were in. In fact, before they started selling some of this stuff off, it WAS actually rare to see it. At least some of it!
I cannot ever recall seeing Henckels 17's until the last few years and believe me, I have looked for Henckels much longer than I care to admit!

Thanked: 480Gee Tom, I wish I had known. I would have given you first crack.
There are a couple of 17s on the bay right now, but none of them nice enough for you (I know you don't settle for less than optimal conditions)
There was a 14 over at Nippon as well, but way overpriced (at least as far as this cheap bastard was concerned)
I don't know what the mm size was on the 17s, but mine measured in at 7/8 If you check the widths of many of the supposed "mint" razors out there, you will find them coming in rather shy of the measurements they were born with.
