Thanked: 480This is sort of my whole point. You cant call it an auction, if the starting prices are already above market levels. A new shaver comes along, and sees nothing but 1200 dollar razors, they get it into their heads that is what they are worth. Antique dealers love to use the Bay as a price guide. They pop on, check to see what so called "auctions" are asking, and they see 1200 dollars and they price accordingly. Next thing you know the entirety of the market place is based upon a false assumption.
It appears that in this instance, I am going to benefit from that. And with an uncovered trip to the dentist, this is a good thing. But my wallet appreciates this far more than my soul does. I have too much of the "fairness gene" in my DNA. Perhaps there is a drug I can take to alleviate the symptoms?

I have always believed that ALL eBay auctions should start at $1.00 for all items. By all means let the owner place a Reserve, but starting at a $1.00 is the only way to properly gauge the market. As for these inflated asking prices, like the Pan Shows all say, you can ASK whatever you want, but what did it SELL for?
I agree with you re: the antique shops. There are a few in my area that DEFINITELY inflate their prices based on their brand.

Thanked: 459I spent about two minutes looking at this auction thinking "who is meadfulthings, I know I've done some business of some type with that person", and I didn't make the connection that it was the OP until I read along further!!
I agree with the fairness gene. I really wish ebay would do something about all of these moronic listings so that we didn't have to sift through them. I've overpaid for razors or stones that are particularly what I wanted at that moment, but not ridiculously so.
This same thing has happened in the past with tools, where one vendor goes to every large estate sale they can find and buys the entire inventory, and a specific type of tool (it was infills at the time that I can recall) is doubled in price for most of the items available. The old school dealers would buy on the cheap and end up selling around or just above market, but not double. The new class of people was what I'd call hobby dealers, they had made money somewhere else and could tie it up playing games with the used tool market. If they had 5000 listings and sold 3 a day, they didn't care.
It looks like from this sale, someone will get a good shaver (and a big one, they are BIG, and in a way that's not appreciated until you get them on your face) for a price that such a quality razor wouldn't be available new.
I do wish someone would create an auction site that had no-reserve auction listings only. the problem is the start up, getting enough people to watch so that you could attract some sellers.
I found the same thing as the ebay effect on gunbroker when I went to try to find a sharps replica single shot rifle, you know like the one in the quigley movie. There are probably 30-60 sharps of various makes on there at any given time, and probably a small fraction of them will actually sell. The rest are listings that get relisted every time they expire. The auctions do fine, but only about 50-60% of the listed prices for the nice ones.

Thanked: 2027I have not used ebay in the past year or so,will not pay the 10% toke to them.
But what I have done in the past,if a potential bidder asks a question (most SRP members will)
I ask them if they belong to SRP,(most do) than I will stop the auction, sell to the member, ask for a screen name. and save 10%CAUTION

I am sure I will. Ha, my first bay purchase is from an SRP member. Smart, if you ask me... Trying to learn the whole bay/razor thing.
Shave report will follow....
Magpie,
I can't help but ask, if you want to sell a razor for a 'fair' price (the premiss of this thread) why not just post it here in the classifieds? Again, I'm just trying to understand the intracacies of our art.
