Incredible shrinking scales on a red imp. Looks like there is a good blade in there though.

I know that older celluloid scales put off a fume that is hazards to razors but is there a certain condition that makes it worse? and what would determine what would start cell rot?

Thanked: 1184I read a scientific paper on this and it seems heat and moisture are the 2 biggest causes of cell rot in celluloid. I know acetone eats it right now :<0) I am sure alcohol is not good for it either. As the material degrades it puts off a gas that corrodes metal at a very fast pace.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

The color of the scales is a factor from what I've seen. Darker scales rarely rot and light scales rot often. This makes me wonder if UV isn't a big issue. Pigments will absorb the UV before it penetrates the plastic. Which would probably mean a good way to kick off rot would be display it in the sun at a flea market/swap meet any maybe even in a glass box where the temp can hit 250 while it's being UV treated.
