Just wanted to say that although I've not handled many razors, I got mine back from Ron last night and it sure shaves beautifully!
MANY THANKS!

I'll take you up on that offer just to see if you can get an edge on the razor(assuming of course I'm not to late). The razor is a Bengall round point I bought at an antique store. I've tried for some time now to hone it and get nowhere. PM me if interest in the challenge.

Ron, only because I am interested in making a similar offer, I ask how experienced were you with the hones before offering?
I've been at this since Feb, and sharpen all my blades to my satisfaction. My progression ends with 16k shapton, followed by stropping on paste, cotton, leather.
Cant assure that my blades are the sharpest ...but always comfortable and sharp enough to give my bbs.
What's your suggestion on when to go public? And do you think the extra honing has sharpened your skills? By the way, very generous offer.
Jim

Thanked: 3795For postage, I just leave it up to the razor owner. You choose the mailing, insurance, and tracking option. You also pay for it. That can be with stamps, a pre-paid mailing label, cash, money order, or check.
Since you're in New Zealand, it might be more practical for you to contact someone closer for honing. Jimbo and Onimaru55 both live in Australia so you might want to contact one of them.

Thanked: 3795Actually, I AM doing it as a challenge. I'm trying to prove to myself (and others) that I can hone a greater variety of razors, that I can handle a greater volume of razors, and that I can do them well. Speaking of variety, thanks to Gugi I have a beautiful monstrous Dovo to hone for him and that will be a great experience!
How experienced was I? I've been straight shaving for 4-5 years. Until joining SRP in September of 2007, I only had a Swaty. I have a few more hones now! Learning to use them properly is a continuing endeavor. I started selling and honing straight razors locally a few months after joining here. (The advantage of local selling is that I can help teach how to use the razor and I can easily re-hone if the edge gets messed up.) I waited about a year before selling a razor in the Buy/Sell/Trade section because I wanted to make sure what I was selling was honed well enough. Personally, I hate it when people join up and almost immediately pretend that they know what they are doing. I did not want to do that, so I waited, but I have since discovered that I did not wait long enough. My honing skills have continued to improve. I'm not bragging, nor am I declaring any level of competence. I'm just certain that my honing ability today is much better than it was even 6 months ago.
When to go public? I can't answer that for anyone else. I'd guess that I honed about 150 razors before "going public." I have certainly found that my honing has continued to improve as I have honed more razors and I expect that to continue. I tend toward the practical side in most matters so nearly every razor I have bought for myself or to sell has been a basic old cheap razor. The advantage of honing for others is it guarantees access to a much greater diversity of razors. It also guarantees a much longer life for your personal razors, as you will rarely have the opportunity to touch them!
Actually, I will continue to check this thread from time to time. I had removed the link to it from my signature line because the original post in this thread made an offer to hone three razors and that was confusing some people. I've now restored the link in the signature line and added an explanation that will hopefully get people to understand the three razor limit is long gone. Anyway, with the link in my signature line, I should remember to occasionally click on it myself!

So is this still being offered? I have a 4/8" straight with a spike point that I'd like to get honed.

Thanked: 3795Yes, it's still being offered. I will be honing at least 100 free razors so it will be going on for quite a while longer. So far have only honed about 30.
That means, if you are relatively new and you have a razor that needs to be honed, I'll still do it for free. You just have to pay for postage both ways.
I'm willing to hone virtually anything except for razors on the SRP do not buy list, as they are a waste of both of our time. Just send me a PM giving me a very brief description of your razor and I'll send you all of the necessary information.
