Hi All,
i have just been using palm bowls that come with the soap in them, but these mugs look awfully interesting. One thing i am not clear on and hope someone will clarify please - do you leave your soap permanently in the bowl ? or if that is not a good idea, what do you do ?

I think you're not meant to put soap pucks in either of the scuttles or leave them there. The Moss scuttle, the smaller one in the picture, is (at least originally) meant to just keep your lather warm. So you'd get your soap or cream, make lather in a lathering bowl or similar, and then scoop over the lather and rest the lather and brush in the top bowl where it will be kept warm.

Oscar's scuttles, that's the large one in the picture, is similar but is large enough to use as a lathering bowl. So you'd load your brush with soap and/or cream make lather in the scuttle and then just leave it there.

I think what Adam meant is whether you leave the soap cake stuck in the bottom of the bowl. Well, you can and it's common practice, but I find it somewhat messy. Plus the drawback of dissolving more and more soap as the shave continues. That is why I prefer those soap lids.

Oh, of course, I totally misread it. Yeah, most people seem to leave the soaps in the bowl they came in. And then some grate it, like Oscar. And there are even people who melt their soaps and pour them into different containers, although that seems to be risky business.

that helps. Living in a warm climate, i probably don't need a scuttle, but when funds permit i may just try one in the interest of research....

I can't tell from the pictures, are there holes in the bottom of the 'bowel?' I've seen several examples of older scuttles that have those drain holes.

No, Dave, all you find in the bottom is grooves to help build the lather.

I have a Moss Scuttle and refuse to go without warm lather ever again. 97 degrees round these parts, makes no difference. The warm lather brings out the best in those creams and soaps.

I have been drooling over these scuttles since I first laid eyes on them. Oskar, you will have an order from me in the near future. I think I am going to have to put in a bigger sink in my bathroom after seeing it beside Sarah's scuttle though. I wanted a bigger sink anyway...
