The Game Park owner where Palmer shot the lion has now been charged in the affair.
For clarity, the lion was in a national refuge park. He was lured to a game park.
Zimbabwe court charges game park owner over illegal hunt of Cecil the lion
Besides the $50k he paid for the license, I wonder how much he had to pay the others involved to kill the lion.Last edited by rolodave; 08-19-2015 at 11:24 AM.

Thanked: 3223Yup, I think the locals are far more concerned with just plain day to day survival in a country with a wrecked economy that has suffered from hyper inflation for many years. Under the circumstance I be the same way considering Zimbabwe dollars phased out - BBC News .

I think Bill is right. There will be enormous costs associated with getting Palmer back to this country. But, with both governments now launching investigations there will probably be pressure placed on Palmer to pay a heavy fine rather than risk extradition. I hope the fine is enormous.
His dental practice is more than likely ruined. I doubt if he will ever be able to afford such actions in the future. He will pay for ignoring the law for the rest of his life as he should. If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

I would like to think the death of this very old/mature lion with the help of the media has raised substantial attention to the plight of endangered species in general.

I do not know about all the details, but it seems shady business was going on and the dentist seems to have been aware of it, but I will leave firm judgment to those with legal knowledge of the matter. Also, if you spend $50,000 on a lion's head, and don't know exactly where it came from, you either really do not give a damn or have more money than you should.
I also understand there is such a thing as culling and that it has uses, but to me there is no sign that this was part of any official, well-founded culling.
Even though I understand this argument, the positive effect of negative actions is mildly alleviating at best.
What really grinds my gears though, is the "good people moral outrage", especially the "...but I'm not getting out of this chair" variety (Tweet, tweet, blog, blog!!!"¤¤%21") and ensuing mob justice. I cannot think of anything more disturbing and uglier than a hysterical pitchfork mob deciding what is right or wrong, heading to the castle to slay the evil, subhuman monster.Last edited by Pithor; 08-19-2015 at 01:42 PM.

My wording was off, you are correct. It did bring a lot of attention. I do feel that this is alleviating a negative situation at best, sort of like whatever you call the positive inversion of collateral damage.
Sadly though, people's attention span is short and often their principles highly flexible. To state the obvious: positive side-effects are positive, but they are only side-effects.
