What happens there is that each riding gets two seats and each voter usually gets two votes. Voters get to vote for their favourite candidate and their preferred party. Voters get the most popular candidate in any riding and whatever the popular vote percentage is for each party is achieved, usually from a party list, to fill the rest of the House. There's usually a bare minimum percentage like 2% to 5% of the popular vote to deserve a first seat and ridings tend to be a bit bigger to fit all the seats. That's smart for a multi party system.

Let's bring back trial by combat. Something along the lines of the "Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome" model: Two candidates enter, one candidate leaves! At least elections would be more interesting.

I want to live where EVERYONE speaks English, the pledge of allegience has "one nation under God" in it, and where personal honor, integrity and responsibility are important. Some place where right and wrong is still right and wrong and not a function of some personal multiple choice buffet.

I know this place exists and this is where I'm moving to.

Yep - I tried to plead a case along those lines once and was told that the rules apply to everyone, regardless of intellectual capacity: even our Prime Minister votes.

Vimes had once discussed the Ephebian idea of 'democracy' with Carrot, and
had been rather interested in the idea that everyone had a vote until he
found out that while he, Vimes, would have a vote, there was no way in the
rules that anyone could prevent Nobby Nobbs from having one as well. Vimes
could see the flaw there straight away.

I wonder what the level of spoiled ballot sheets is in countries where voting is compulsory? Surely it's a democratic right NOT to vote if one so chooses?

Neal Boortz has an interesting position on the right to vote. It's worth a read. I'll try to find it. I wouldn't do it justice if I tried to paraphrase it.

One of the challenges of forum software is that it doesn't recognize quotes from people that you have placed on your ignore list and strip them from other people's posts.

Every now and then I am reminded how lucky I am. My wife is ok with an average sized deck. She also has no aversion to chemicals and actually enjoys most strippers.

Of course you are free not to vote. Our voting system (either paper or software) specificaly has an option that allows you to NOT vote.
The only thing that is mandatory is turning up.
