It's similar here, although probably not as extreme yet, at least in the cities. We were lucky and bought in between price peaks. But we had to do a 30 year mortgage so we could afford the repayments.... I've heard that in parts of Japan, housing costs are so high that they have instituted long-term (50-60 year) mortgages where you obligate the next generation to continue making the payments!

And here in the States, I've just lately seen advertisements for 'Reverse Mortgages'....I'm not sure how they work, but they seem to market them to the elderly, and I assume it's something like you sell your house, continue to live in it, and the buyer-investor makes monthly payments and gets the house when you're gone. It's a way for the elderly to recoup their investment and get a monthly income without actually having to move. Seems like that would piss the kids off, though!

We've got reverse mortgages here too. My mother took advantage of one to put in a pool. It seems to work OK but I don't understand the details all that well.
