Real bummer Rich, sorry to hear about that. You could always join us over here, we can always use another "commando" in the Army!

That really sucks the big one, Rich. So sorry to hear that. Don't let it shake your confidence too much, I'm sure most of us on here have lost a job at some point.
It's definitely an opportunity to find yourself something even better!

I hear you. Sometimes I wonder whether employment law in the US might just be a little bit more generous to individuals. When we had to make cutbacks in our NY and London offices, there was a huge gulf between HR policies.
In NY: staff were informed at 9.00, by 9.15 they were out with 4 weeks severance pay.
In London: staff were informed at 9.00. Their notice period is 1 month so they carry on working for the next 30 days whilst starting the search for another job. After they leave, they receive a minimum of 3 months' redundancy money, tax free (or 1 month for every year served).
The difference was that I felt a whole load of guilt and shame for the New Yorkers and, frankly, made me question the philosophy of the company I work for. In London the staff were OK, what with the added security. We helped them find new jobs with outplacement services (written into their contracts) and most of them found new work immediately.
And the company? It clearly paid more for the London situation, but in return got tax breaks, good PR, staff left without too much bad feeling, and life went on relatively painlessly.
When I was made jobless I had a similar situation. The pressure is immense for the breadwinner of any family. I think good corporate governance can make the world of difference for families.
Rich, keeping my fingers crossed for you to find something soon!

Thanked: 4Worst case, you should be able to keep money coming in via a temp agency. Also, a lot of companies will hire temps as full time employees if they like them.
