Thank you Nightblade and I am going to overlook the snark as people are worried and I get that. I am not trying to diminish what is going on now. What I am saying is that we SHOULD pay more attention to influenza ALSO. This will likely dwarf the effects of influenza but if you look at how the flu effects.the world every single year we are foolish to discount it the way that we do. Perhaps this pandemic will make us pay more attention to infectious disease in general in the future.

I want to be clear that i am not dismissing Covid 19 nor am I comparing it to the flu, nor am I being argumentative. I just want to explain what I believe is an important point.
This is not the source of "where I am getting my news from," but it has roughly the same information.

A few years ago I had type A influenza and it is possibly the sickest I have ever been. At one point I really thought I was going to die. It astonishes me that the populace as a whole seems to ignore the dangers as if they don't even exist. Maybe it's because type B influenza is nowhere near as bad. Maybe it's because people self diagnose incorrectly. For example an intestinal virus (gastroenteritis) is often called "stomach flu" which , by the way, is not a thing. Influenza is a respiratory infection. Whatever it is influenza should not be ignored. The same could be said for heart disease, stroke and any number of other health conditions. I may be a little hypersensitive about influenza because since I had a kidney removed (within a year of having that flu) I have been told that it is imperative that I get the flu shot since taking NSAIDS for that long in order to fight fever could be detrimental to the remaining kidney.
I think it is a good thing that people do seem to be taking this seriously and rightly so. Remember though that the last time we had a pandemic of this magnitude was influenza. Hopefully we will ALL take this as a shot over the bow as to how we think about health in general and take necessary precautions to stay healthy.Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend. If we want to start comparing, well how many folks die in motor vehicle accidents or how many die by firearms or how many mess themselves up with chainsaws and it goes on and on. Certain things our society must endure and we chalk it up to necessity no different than a cave man going hunting and never returning and his clan dies.
Pretty much all the deaths from common season flu affects very old and sick folks. Younger healthy folks don't die from it. Yea, you can get pretty sick but you recover. This bug can kill anyone and make you so sick the seasonal flu seems like a cakewalk. Additionally, we don't even know about after effects on your body after you recover. Also just wait until next year. We don't know about this thing mutating. Remember the Spanish Flu hit the first season and it was mild. It returned next year and that's when it decimated the world.
We simply don't know about this Corona Virus. It's kind of like playing Russian Roulette.
An interesting irony about this. The hospital at ground zero in NYC Elmhurst Hospital is a city owned hospital. The neighborhood right next to it is called...yup you guessed it... Corona. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

MOST of the.time it is old, sick and infirmed who die from influenza. The Spanish flu mainly effected young healthy people. You just don't ever know. Strains of influenza come and go each year and morph into something else. This pandemic could just as easily have been another influenza bug. A cave man hunting had certain risks he had to take to avoid starvation. Hand washing.and other simple precautions are easy to do and can help avoid spreading influenza and other things to those who normally are more vulnerable.
Edit: I'm not being combative about this. What I'm saying is we should have been doing this all along. Influenza has always been a danger to us and we've become complacent. It shouldn't take a pandemic to make us take these precautions. we'd all be healthier and our healthcare system would be under less strain if we would take more reasonable precautions ALL the time.Last edited by PaulFLUS; 04-05-2020 at 08:03 PM.
