Thanked: 3226The houses around us were built about 1960 and afaik none have sump pumps. If they do they were put in later. We only had about an inch of water so all it did was wreck the wooden sub floor so that needs to be torn out. We won't be replacing it either. Most of the stuff was up on shelves so we lost little there. Could have been a lot worse.

So right now I'm sitting by the pool drinking a pina colada listening to Jimmy Buffet...not. My Central A/C went out Friday night. It's 98F and hovering around 100F out and will be for days. It's around 85F in the house. They tell me they can fix me up by Friday after I pay them 11 grand for a new unit. The fans just blow around hot air.
It's a good thing I don't have a pool otherwise I'd probably drown myself.

A funeral this weekend and another next.
Probably not a big thing to you in New Mexico but I weeded my cactus garden today.
My hand is a little itchy and a couple more stickers to get out!
Testing my central air that I have never had before. Installed last fall just in time for the heating season so we are checking it out before it is really needed.

Our house is about 25 years old and a five minute walk from Lake Erie. The ground is low here so everytime it rains the guy over the road grows a lake in his front yard. We have a sump pump and if we get more than an couple hours of rain we hear it firing every few minutes for the next day or two.

I get where you're coming from Spendur.
When we were buying this house we had it inspected first, the inspector turned on the central air and heard it so said it works.
It did come on but all it did was pump even more hot air in and the first couple of nights here were a nightmare.
We couldn't sleep, the sheets were soaking wet with the heat. We already new the furnace was on it's last legs so we got a few quotes and ended up with a new Maytag furnace and A.C unit. It cost us $10,000 and although it works realy well now. Because the house is on five levels and open plan, even with all the vents shut except for upstairs the cold still sinks down into the family room so it's like sitting in a fridge. My wife sits in August with a thick sweater and a blanket to watch telly in the evening.- - Steve

This weekend - I went out and mowed the lawn yesterday, it took about an hour and didn't need it but those massive scarey man eating fish flies have arrived and I thought I would get the grass done so I could stay in and look at them through the window until there gone cos I'm a big girl and they scare me so much, so do spiders and those huge centipede things that run across the floor in the house.
I tried begging my wife to get rid of them, I even cried but apparently it's a mans job to get rid of them so I have to get my big boy pants on. I think she hates me!- - Steve

18 years ago we installed the initial A/C. We were using swamp coolers like most folks in this part of the country. We installed a Carrier System, new furnace and all and had to upgrade our Electric service from 60 amps to 150 amps with a new panel. That was 12 grand back then.
You have to be careful with this stuff. There are these builder special units that have name brands but they are junk and won't last and don't work well. They are licensed by outfits like Carrier who get kickbacks for using their name. My first house in California had a Gaffers and Sattler unit which is Magic Chef west of the Mississippi. The house was new and within 2 years the A/C went out. The relays in it were junk and went out. The service guy said the unit has a 5 year warranty and you'll be lucky to get that much out of it.
Our new A/C will be a Heil 5 ton unit.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

My unit is around 2.5 tons. I will have to check for sure....
We have lost 2'F inside today and the outside temp is 97 to 100"f depending on who you talk to.
My house was built in 1909 so it doesent have perfect duct work. LOL
I have it set at 72'f and need to work on some balencing.

Thanked: 2209I am so glad that I have a small house, 24x36, with no need for central air. I installed my window a/c this morning and now all is cool, cool, cool!
