Thanked: 150I am not catholic, and I do not believe in catholicism. I will never defend the Catholic institution's acquiescence to the molestation of children. I feel that every priest, bishop, archbishop, cardinal that in anyway facilitated the cover up of any molestation should be criminally prosecuted, and left to rot in jail for the remainder of their days as a conspirator to the crime of child molestation. Put them in the general population and make them wear a pink prison uniform to signify that they are a child molester.
With regards to the political leanings of the catholic "church" and the use of its position to influce their congregation, the Catholic institution is more akin to a feudal system of government, and is run as such. Anything that is a threat to this institution's existence and attempts to gain more power is opposed. I personally feel that the Catholic "Church's" use of the pulpit to proliferate certain political views is only in its interests of propagate itself as a quasi-governmental entity, and is not in the interests of the congregation. I personally feel that the Catholic "church" as an institution, feels that the congregation is there to support the "church" and not that the "church" is there to support the congregation.
Again, all of the above is IMHO.Last edited by mhailey; 07-15-2008 at 05:28 PM.

Thanked: 31.5% of the Catholic priests in the United States are suspected of being ephebophiles. This is a horrible number that should cause all Catholics great sorrow, but compare this to 4% of the general population and, some suggest, 10% of Protestant clergy. I feel the number should be closer to the Catholic one, though. The reputation for widespread ephebophilia amongst Catholic clergy is undeserved. This is especially true when we compare how different organizations have dealt with this situation within their own ranks. What other international organization has apologized so much? Disciplined its own people? Aided secular governments in criminal prosecution? None. That is why you know about Catholics molesting little boys, not because you're some brilliant sleuth. Excommunicated, prosecuted, and destroyed for their sins.

I think we may have begun to run a little off topic.

I wonder if those who have focused on what Rev. Wright has said as evidence against Mr. Obama recall what was said following the 9/11 attacks by "mainstreamers" Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell about how God was punishing this country for its transgressions. Prominent white religious leaders blame America for the 9/11 attacks--one set of standards. Less prominent black religious leader blames America for its past/current racial injustices-different set of standards.
God Bless America

I have to say, chaps, I'm with Bruno on this. A very wise man once said that we get the leaders we deserve. We have a leader who was shoed in without any democratic process by his predecessor. Your current leader, as far as I understand & remember, was picked for you by a bunch of lawyers. Some of my friends here thought you got your just deserts. I wonder if this years charade will end any differently.
I cannot see one iota of difference between McCain & Obama. I hope that whomever is elected doesn't drag my country down any further than Bush has already. You gents sometimes seem to lose sight of the fact that your Presidential elections have global consequences.
If you think that the Catholic Church has not committed any greater sin than covering up such shameful actions by its officers, you really should read some world history. The list starts as soon as the church was founded & continues, I would imagine, long into the future. They have never actually apologised for any of it.
Just my hap'orth

"I was wondering when you going to show up Sir!
Just can't resist a good hanging can you?"
Well, somebody with a set of brains has to occasionally weigh in to comment on the crap that emanates from certain quarters. Sir.
