Pres. Obama, between a rock and a hard place.
I have been paying close attention to this whole thing in Iran with the elections and all. And have viewed Pres. Obamas actions on this matter a little Chamberlain-esque.
His reasoning in this latest piece makes sense to me. I am still for standing on the side of the people of Iran openly but George Washington did not take the side of the French people in their revolution and as it turns out, he was right to do so as the reign of terror that took place after proved him right.
My question to all of you: Is Obama being cowardly And not being a leader or is he being shrewd and wise?
As I said, his reasoning makes sense but only time will tell if it is true wisdom or lack of strength.

Thanked: 90Can you tell me when the US has taken action in regards to another nations internal conflict and it's turned out well for the US? We put the Shah in there in the first place, and that totally backfired on us when he turned out to be a despot, and we backed the Taleban in Afganestan. Everyone the US has backed either turned on us, been a total dictator, or both. I hardly think that minding ones own business in this case is in any way Chamberlain-esque. Iran is not gearing up for an invasion of her neighbors as Hitler clearly was. Iran is in the throws of a power struggle. Do you think that the opposition will be any friendlier to the US?
Face it, doing nothing is likely to be the very best option for the US and the rest of the damned world. We don't exactly have a great record when it comes to intervening in the affairs of the rest of the world.

I don't necessarily mean we should get directly involved just that we should stand up and say we believe in the cause of freedom and do not stand for tyrants, or something along those lines. Just a firm statement of where we stand.

Being european and not fully aware of the matter - though I am informed as to the situation in Iran - I strongly beleive that it is time for America to mind it's own business. Meddling on internal matters of another hosehold is never wise and America seems not to be aware of that. The US is NOT the police of the world and don't have the responsability to enforce democracy on the planet - you do so as to defend your own interests. The defense of democracy is the job of every man and woman that beleives in the power of the people. There should be no need for a State or a government on that task...
Iran is one of the backfired scenarios of undercover "war" and operations in order to dominate something somewhere...
If Obama is saying "we are watching this but we will not interfere (unless you mess with us directly...)", good on him - finaly a decision to be proud of. The world (both friends and enemies of America) are a bit fed up with the cowboy adminisrations... if not being a maverick is chamberlain-ish, fine. But it is not...
Sorry if any of you might be offended by these words of mine - there was none intended in the first place.

Thanked: 402Apart from what fpessanha said - which I totally agree with - I seem to remember a historic scientist commenting on the second Iraq intervention that "its impossible to influence a muslim society from outside".
There is no such example in history and will never be.
The Iran needs a separation between church and government, but thats up to them to work on it.

I think the president should stay away from iran as long as posible...
I wonder what the people who say he should do something about it would have said if Russia or China (just to mention 2 super powers) would intervene in the 2002 election in favor Al Gore...
