Thanked: 293Right on, Glen.
IME, it's the people who preach the most about upholding 1st amendment rights that are frequently the ones who are more offended by free speech (think FCC fanaticism and it's supporters).
Catch 22, double-edged sword, etc.

Thanked: 431Another old saying in Christianity is that the Church cannot be defeated from without but only from within, in the Bible the Lord refers to those outside of the body of Christ (the Church) as 'the world' and the church is in the world and this is just a fact and accepted truth, but the problems occurs when 'the world' gets in
'the church', see what we mean jelly beans? So, it is indeed in a sense an inside job, not to mention the many shameful disobedient and/or rebelious Christians.
Another good analogy - like a ship in water, everything is fine when the ship is in the water, the problem starts when the water gets in the ship.

Well, unless they state it openly it's pretty much a pure speculation what somebody's intent is.
Of course, that's never stopped people from claiming their opinion is a fact.... I blame the lax standards in schools, a basic proficiency in logic should be required before teaching writing, typing and using internet.

Thanked: 586Mark,
I read your opening post very carefully as I read all your thread openers, with great hope that you may stumble upon a different path to lead us down. Although my response did hold questions, those questions were rhetorical in nature. I will continue reading your openers with care and sincere interest. I still have hope for you.
I wish you and your beautiful family a healthy and happy new year!

I may be off base here, but I suspect that the organizations which your refer to in the OP are not so much attempting to destroy Christianity or any other religion as they are attempting to remove religions control over their lives.
Personally, as a person who does not identify with right or left wing, conservative or liberals enough on any aspect to align myself with them, as well as being unconcerned with religion I have no issue with what anyone choses to believe as long as they do not try and coerce me into living my life according to their rules and expectations.
I can see why attempts by organizations to remove that influence could seem as though it was an effort to undermine a religious organization. To that though I ask if it necessary for any religion's beliefs to be forced through governmental interaction for the followers of said religion to worship?

It does say that it was not illegal. However being killed for actually exercising that right by government employees working from official policy makes it defacto illegal even though it was derigor legal.
For a modern example and similar though slightly safer personal experience try taking an alarm clock and a package of candles in your carry-on the next time you fly, its not illegal but it will get you persecuted. Or six ounces of shampoo, that's not illegal either, but policy doesn't allow it so you get persecuted, mildly compared to being beaten to death but persecuted for doing something legal though against policy all the same.Last edited by Wildtim; 01-02-2010 at 04:40 PM.

Thanked: 1587As I grow more cynical with age, I would venture to say that in my opinion most major Christian religions are doing their level best to bring about the demise of Christianity.

Unfortunately I fear that this is true.
I've never had serious arguments with anyone BUT Christians while I was on a missionary service for my church.
I was appaulled to find out how hatefull some people would be to us even though we asked (nicely) if we could share a message of love. I've had people yell and threaten me for trying to share something that I felt was important enough to go around and ask people if I could tell them about it.
Bruno stated something similar in the first page of this thread and I have to agree with you guys.
I'm truly ashamed of organisations that preach hate against others. I'm glad to say that I believe that my church does not such thing officially.
(on a local level maybe here and there yes,but not on a world scale.)
