Thread: The Anti-Christ?

Anyone using the term "Anti-Christ" in a serious manner, literally interpreting the Bible and applying it to our modern day political climate is a complete moron, in my opinion.

Right, well, I wasn't directing my comment at any person in particular, so I'm not being uncivil here. I'm only saying that to take the Bible literally is problematic to begin with; but to apply some the most fantastical things within its pages to real world politics is totally absurd. I could point to a host of American founding fathers and political theorists who were far more blunt about just this issue than I was in my post. You know...seperation of church and state?
Then there's that little thing we were all taught in school: "Don't believe everything you read."

If you listen to Obama's Inaugral address backwards, it will confirm 73% of all the assertions within this thread

I just don't get it. Nothing is every good enough for the people who are convinced Obama, if not the anti-christ, is an evil communist or something.
Fact: Your taxes went down. So you complain they didn't go down *enough*? I don't understand. How much exactly where you expecting?
Yes, tax on cigarettes and booze went up. But I can tell you for certain that you're still paying half what people in most developed countries are for cigs, and alcohol prices are now about the same, but still less than some places.
I was getting slaughtered on cig prices in Europe and NZ. The prices in the US are like getting them for free.
You are consuming things which make you more likely to wind up in the hospital. That's your choice. Why would you complain when the government makes you *pay* for your choice, considering they are providing the facilities that will have to deal with it? I'm a smoker, and I accept the risk that goes with that, and that my habit is costing society money. So raise the taxes. I made the choice.Last edited by MistressNomad; 03-26-2010 at 06:00 AM.

How much does it cost you for a pack of smokes?
Here in Canada, I buy what are commonly referred to as one of the "cheap" name brand cigarettes. Prices vary from one retailer to the next, but my brand will range from around $8.40 - $9.00 a pack! Pfft. Cheap, huh?
Also, I'm particularly interested in how much you pay now, since the US dollar is on par with ours at the moment. Or thereabouts.

I pay about six and change for a brand that is a little more expensive...I think standards, Marlboros, etc., are about six bucks...I hear in the cities they are considerably higher

I smoke rollies. A 1.3oz of nice Bali Shag costs 10 bucks. And that's in the North, which is comparatively expensive. When I lived in DC, it was a short ride to Virgina, where it's much cheaper.
I could be a little off, since I haven't bought a pack of tailors in a long time, but I think it's around $6. You can generally buy Basics for a dollar less though. And again, those are inflated Northern prices. I'd pay $3.50 for a pack of smokes in Virginia (never bought rollies while I was down there - tailors are so cheap that there's no point).
P.S. I started smoking while I was in Europe, and by the time I was next in the States the tax increase had already gone into effect, so I can't answer about the pre-tax prices for sure.Last edited by MistressNomad; 03-26-2010 at 06:37 AM.

I haven't seen any false miracles from him yet, so I reserve judgement at this point.
Regarding the Muslim thing; On youtube it's easy to find a clip of some interview he did were he very clearly, no question, mentions something about his "Muslim faith" at which time the journalist quickly corrects him and says "your Christian faith" at which point Obama doesn't even skip a beat and repeats "my Christian faith".
Meaningless and accidental slip of the tongue? It's certainly possible that's all it was. Who knows.
