France and Italy out -- the previous world cup finalists! That helps put England's current woes into perspective.
Portugal's win was great. Particularly Christiano Ronaldo's goal. The way he adapted whilst stumbling to control the ball with the back of his neck and then scored... well, he's currently the only player in the world who could pull that off.
Japan looked excellent last night. Fast, great first touch, brilliant passing. The Paraguay-Japan game should be fantastic on the strength of that. Denmark never looked likely to score. But I'm glad Jon Dahl Tomasson scored to equal the Danish record of goals scored at international level -- even if he was very lucky after missing the penalty!
I am already nervous for Sunday's game: England-Germany. Traditionally one of the biggest international clashes in football (soccer). And traditionally, England lose on penalties.

Brasiland Portugal through, can't help feeling sorry that the Ivory Coast didn't make it. Oh well, Come On Ghana (after England natch).
Ah yes, Sunday, bigger for us than for them, I think. Nice little article on it here.

Well it was a great game between the US and Ghana and our shoddy defense finally caught up with us. Can't blame the officiating for this one -- they made good on their opportunities and we mostly wasted ours.
Sadly the general interest in soccer will once again wane until 2014. Now I'm rooting for England, Spain and the Netherlands.

Just watched the game with my son and i was sorry for the USA and sorry for my son ( he plays American football and fancies everything from USA). Ghana played a lady game so i really wished USA would have made it.
My heart still beats for the Netherlands and Germany. Sorry to see Germany - UK tomorrow as i would have liked to watch them both at finals. Hope Ger wins (UK for my son)'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'

Tomorrow is the big one for me.
I would really like to see the English team play up to their potential.
I've been a fan of Leeds united, and English football for 35 years now, so I'm hoping this will be the year football is finally coming home again.
History tells me otherwise, but a true fan always keeps his hopes up
Sad to see the hard working Team USA loose today.
Would have loved to see them go a lot further.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

It was a good game. Loved the way the US came out in the second half, you've got a very good manager there. Am already biting my nails to the quick in anticipation of today's match.

Oh dear, 4-1… Barring a miracle, I think we surrender. Well done Germany, good luck. I'm off to drink beer.

Alan I feel the same way.... Fack. Cracking one open now, last few goals with only happened in a matter of minutes between them really sealed the coffin...

Gongrats Germany for fine game.
I think that without the referee suicide decision not to accept a sure goal it might have ended little different. Maybe it was that one black moment that broke the neck of England. Of course English goalie and defense didn't have their finest day either; they were helpless against German counterstrikes that were total blitzkrieg. My sympathies for Britons but better team won.
Edit: I'm so glad it ended 4-1. My wife won € 900 on the soccer bettingLast edited by Sailor; 06-27-2010 at 04:09 PM.

Congrats to Germany. I guess it's a better ending than having it be 2-1 with a goal not counted. The German attack really made the English defense look slow. Seems that Lampard had a few great strikes but just couldn't get anything to go in (and count).
I can root for Germany but I was really pulling for England in this match. The possible Germany/Argentina match is looking quite intriguing!
