I don't think I ever shared these. We drove to Florida late last year for my FILs funeral. Sad times, but good times too. We stayed on the beach (well, in a hotel on the beach).

Here are some photos I am not sure if I shared before...

A month and a half later we had to attend my father's funeral. That was a short trip, since we have been neighbors for the last 12 years.

It has been sad/tough to field questions from the boys with regard to why they lost both grandfathers right around Christmas. "Why is God taking our Grandpas?" Is a tough one to answer.

We still keep our sense of humor though

Sorry to hear of your loss. The raccoon picture still has me laughing though.

I'm kicking myself for leaving the camera at home today and having to rely on my phone. However, I feel a patriotic need to share these images of our strategic reserve of maple syrup being replenished. And yes, while some nations have strategic reserves of oil or gold, we have one of maple syrup.

    Priorities, my friends, priorities...

Most large-scale producers have moved away from wood-fired boilers, so this guy is a bit old-school in his approach.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.

Yup, it's one of the few photos that actually makes me giggle every time I see it.

This one always gets me too. I took this one at the hotel we stayed at earlier last year when we drove down to see him (last time we saw him). You know...all these rules had to be written because before they were posted they must have had a problem...though I'm not sure which one was a problem first #6 or #7

Old school is the good school! Ive spent countless hours boiling old school, and gathering as well no tubing etc, this season has been exceptional!

That's very sad. However, I think the fact that the three kids have the same T shirt on pretty funny too. :-)
I haven't lost a family member yet, and I'm 51 soon. When I do, I think I'll find it hard to handle. When I find it hard to handle, I'll think of you and how strong you are...
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

You missed step four: taking what collects in the bucket and boiling most of it off. On average it takes somewhere around 40 litres of sap to make one litre of syrup. As it comes from the tree, the sap is very watery with just a hint of sweetness. I think it actually tastes great like that and am just waiting for someone to market it as a health drink.

Anyway, after it's collected, the sap is put in some kind of boiler or other and reduced until it has a high enough sugar content. Then it is bottled. And *then* we proceed to the whisky, beer, moose, and hockey stick portions of our days.

Most big operations now have connected their trees with lines/hoses that collect the sap and run it direct to where it is collected. When you are tapping hundreds of acres of trees, that's a lot of running around with buckets.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
