Thanked: 1185Incorrect, I lived two and a half years in Iceland, the most socialist place on the planet (complete with a 75% income tax rate) thanks but no. My country was once a shining city on the hill. Just ask the immigrants from every corner of the globe who risked their lives to get here, even if here was a meager paycheck and less than posh living accomodations. What made us special was opportunity, a Scottish immigrant who grew up dirt poor could be the richest man in the country (Andrew Carnegie), a black girl from the Jim Crow South could become Secretary of State (Condoleezza Rice). History doesn't bode well for the socialist experiment either from a personal liberty stand point or a fiscal success standpoint. Despite what Michael Moore would have you believe, the only thing Socialism has ever divided equally is misery. I don't have to eat a crap sandwich to know that it isn't very tasty.
On a positive note, I'm kind of warming up to migrating back to Texas, I'd live in the hill country and eat chicken fried steaks the size of car hoods a few times a week.Last edited by 1OldGI; 11-14-2012 at 01:14 AM.

Only because the South lost the Civil War and then the battle over Civil Rights.
(BTW that is not her name.)

Thanked: 1185I stand corrected Condoleezza Rice. Nice try button pushing with the mention of the war of Northern Aggression but no joy. I'm a Hoosier by birth, a refugee from South Bend, IN. And oh by the way, it bears pointing out that the GOP endured a mountain of opposition from the Democrats to pass the Civil Rights Bill. It was also a Republican who ended slavery in the U.S.

Sure, you can pretend to live in an alternate reality, but the facts are just the same. The 'War of Northern Aggression' was fought over the freedom to own property. And yes, it was a Northern Republican who ended slavery, yet the petitions we're talking about are precisely about undoing what Lincoln did (keep the union from splitting apart).
I am sorry, but substance is substance and you can not simply negate it by applying a label that meant something completely different 150 years ago.
If you want to make a valid argument about opportunity, you can simply list the highest ranking public officials from the pre- Civil Rights times. Even better if you get back to before the New Deal which, I hear, ruined everything that was great about this country. If your claims are true, you should have no difficulty whatsoever because back then U.S.A. would've provided a lot more opportunities and a lot less entitlements.
What have you got?

The New Republic of Texas?
I'm surprised no one has asked this...but since I lived in Texas, I must.
In this dreamworld where Texas is it's own little conservative oasis...is Rick Perry the President of The Republic of Texas? I shudder to think...

I find it interesting how some people seem to mistake some of the concepts of socialism - and what a socialist country is, and should be. More importantly - how it effects those people who live in those country's.
Let's explore some indexes.
Here is an Index of Economic Freedom: Country Rankings: World & Global Economy Rankings on Economic Freedom
Lets see who's providing the best opportunity's today: The 2012 Legatum Prosperity Index
What nation do you think has the most personal freedoms? The 2012 Legatum Prosperity Index
This one shocked me with the US not even making the top ten! Iceland measured tenth though .
What about quality-of-life? Quality-of-life Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Read these findings as you like - most will disregard them as the ramblings of fools - others might actually begin to wonder why all these country's that embrace some socialist ideals are doing so very well for it's citizens.
America is a fantastic place - and I love it, but it has NEVER been an "easy" place to make a living. Yes some rise to stardom, but that is the VERY few. Many go to school and do ok once they pay off their school debt. And yet many more suffer to make a living... just like any other nation on Earth.Last edited by earcutter; 11-14-2012 at 02:57 AM.

I sent my copy of the Texas Declaratiion of Independence to Wullie. I always believed in Texas' right to secession.
I have also been told it was without teeth. Like Grandma!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
