Thread: 51 MG restoration.

Well, little set back in the restoration,, glad I didn’t take the shed down quite yet..
One of the fenders fell from one of the hangers and sadly didn’t land well.
Chipped the paint right to the primer in a few spots but no dents so,,,

A lot colder outside now so painting this will be a greater challenge.
My biggest quandary though is the pearl coat. Do I just redo this panel and hope I can nail the pearl proportions again, or take the other 5 panels back a stage and re lay black base and pearl across the entire set again.
The other panels need not go back to prime again, I hope. More I was hoping to just remove the clear or scuff it up enough to repaint.
The fender obviously needs a full rebuild of 2k as well as base to get the same thickness before I spray everything.
Any experience with pearl matching Ness?

I wish I knew the answer, but I think with all the material the same you should be ok just doing the one fender, plus none of the other pearl is in contact with each other. Now as far as no dents, are you sure? Sand down a prime then a gauge mist and sand to see. Hate it you had this happen, but it does, I had the same thing happen to my tank last winter, freaking wire didn’t have a good Wrap, I was about to take all my tins down when I heard it crash. 3 days later finally done and now I’ll double up my twists

That really sucks Mike. I have no answers but my gut says you can match it. It isn't all gut though. Look at all the stuff you did. I think if you did it once you can do it again. I think I would try it and see how it looks in place remembering that you know what happened. Maybe get someone who doesn't know to look and see if they can spot it without being told then tell them and see if they can spot it.

Just my thoughts so consider it worth what you paid for it.

I’m leaning the same way gents.
I was pretty meticulous with my measure for the pearl @650ml cup volume, and should be able to get it close.
Figure if anything I’ll go slightly lighter, that way I could always overspray to achieve the same look.
Primers going back on tonight. Wife is not happy I’ve delayed the tear down of the shed, but grudgingly understands why.

Yep Mike, don’t second guess yourself

Augmented my garage heat and got er all done today.

The pearls a magical looking coating indeed, almost trippy in the clear coat before application.

And here, the fender beside one of the original test cars in the original black pearl pattern.

It’s close, maybe a few sparkles less. But close enough to carry on.
Decided to change the rad grill and dash instrument console to the pearled black. I’d sprayed them both in green originally but had a change of heart, and the opportunity today to change them so,,,,



And I was curious what the green would have looked like if I laid the pearl on top so hit one of the test panels.

Honestly, it would not have looked bad, but I’m happy with my plan.
Once these have cured a day or two, tuck them away, take down the shed, and figure out my pedal install, then flooring, wiring, interior, windshield, and seats.. then go for a rip..

A little late to the party…but it looks like you got it. I remember when they came out with black metallics….to me they just look like they have a coat of dust on them. Just write down somewhere the amount of coats you sprayed and you should be ok…in the future. For future mishaps…I use a razor blade and some body filler to get chips and other ef ups …back level to the top coat
