Good video. I am sure with your mechanical knowledge you will understand my point.

You shouldn't replace only one gear of a pair of gears. They wear together and form a pair. If you only replace half of the pair they try to match and that is many times negative.

    Just thinking out loud again!

I agree with you about the gears, and that marriage is sorta similar, we wear together, or we grind and destroy each other, har.
Realistically, i just wanted to know what the pin did exactly. Good to know the reverse ain’t synched as well.

Well, I’m sitting here thinking, how did I get this in the car as I plan removing the engine and transmission. Go back through the picture archive cause I have no memory any more and oh yeah. I put the engine in before I rebuilt the body..
Didn’t leave a zipper or nothin..
So need to figure a way to grab it by the head stud by the water outlet as well as the front timing bracket.

    She’s gonna be tight!.
I hate the idea of unloading only one head nut to install the lift bracket, but can’t really see anything else to connect to. I used the starter bolt hole on the install and thats too far set back now so I’d bend cowling if I tried to use that.
Ahh well. I’ll fabricate a steel plate at work tomorrow to fit under that stud, and get this a little closer. Love to have it out before we get more snow. Driveway is clear, but christmas is coming too my wife is stern to remind me.. hehehe.
    Focus focus..

Got my gaskets for the trans and took the halves to work and soaked them all day in the parts washer.
Glad I did cause that pin did crack the case.

Amazing the bearings and gears are ok. And I’m not sure if some proper metallized epoxy will work. Or maybe I’ll braze it it’s Blue Demon rod, more likely.
Hate the idea of trying to weld an aluminum case.
Gonna clean up the crack and assess it from there.

Wow! I suppose there is always a reason it is out of the car. That reason sucks.
Seems the pin took a ride stuck between 2 teeth of the gear. That is what caused the lengthways damage on the pin. It looks a bit structural there.

Might find a mig guy and dig a bit/weld. Is the pin a detent for the side movement of reverse?
I wonder how it could fall out?
Perhaps not put together properly? Good prep and welds should fix that?

Is that the bottom, side, or the top?

A leak would be relatively easy to stop but if it hit that hard would it change the alignment of the for lack of better term at the moment "bearing holes"?

I would be wondering if you could take it back or not.

That’s the bottom of the case, under the lower gear train, and now that I’ve seen this I’ve given the 5th gear secondary gear a really good inspection as thats the one that the pin would have been rubbing with at that point in the case. Think the clearance is such that it grabbed the pin and it went between the gear and the case splitting it.
That vid i posted, the young guy describes it as a tic tac looking pin that loads against the 4th gear synchro rail as you go into reverse. Idea is it’ll slow down the spinning main shaft some and stop the grinding as you go into reverse.
Figure buddy pulled the transmission when it started leaking and never did anything about it and just sold it.
Glad I decided to open the halves for sure.
The bearings seem solid still on the upper main, and lower secondary shafts. So no signs he ran it dry and overheated anything.
I’ve been V’ing out the cracks and will take it back in to work tomorrow. See if I can braze it up.

Pretty thick and important stuff. I would not take a flame to it, myself. Aluminum wire mig might not be enough. Someone with a hot tig torch with a pedal I think.

My welder told me the next time I try to weld something, don't bring it here!
