I was at a burning man event this weekend and there were a lot of guys in utilikilts. The skinnier guys seemed to be pulling them off pretty well. I couldn't tell you about the hair, that seems to be a case by case kind of thing. As a kilt wearer of many years I can tell you that context and attitude count for pretty much everything. Keep in mind where you will be wearing your kilt, and wear it proudly and confidently.

If in doubt strap a large dagger on your hip as well, that helps with the attitude thing...
If I was wearing one, I might want my rapier or my bowie knife... just to avoid the comments about my blindingly white legs...

Those utilikilts in the picture of 4 guys wouldn't go down in Scotland at all - maybe we are just purists in the kilt sense. Some folk do wear them but only once I reckon. They look like a lot less material too - great for lightweight walking I suppose but if I was up town I would want the ability to let the whole 9 yards move around me. It feels great having the material flow about you. I think these utilikilts are really just skirts - be honest! But if I got one it would be in leather and wear it with a skull and crossbones sporran. Must carry a knife with it - and wear running shoes...

What??!! Oh man, now I'm heartbroken.
I get bitten by EVERYTHING!!! Latest is Horsefly bites, Spike even got me some Jungle bug spray stuff and they still get me!!! I stand firm on the lighter and aerosol can arsenal, mass incineration.
Like the guys say, it's all about attitude. There were plenty of skinny, white legged, long haired kitl or cilt wearers running around these Isles years ago. Go on, be brave. You won't look silly, but we will want a pic.

Thanked: 131This is the second thread I have read in as many minutes regarding Silver and Johnny Depp. Sorry for the slight , but this cannot be a co-incidence. Does she has someone (or something) on the brain?

Thanked: 11Slight correction they were Unionkilts not Utilikilts, and Utilikilts are even more different - they use a stitched box pleat design rather than the traditional pressed pleat. They are as much a skirt as the small kilt normally worn today is.
I'll have you know most of the time I get a lot of compliments on my Utilikilt, obviously the there are incidents with NEDS being abusive - but that would happen with a normal kilt, there was also a recent occurrence of a 6 year old girl asking their dad why I was wearing a skirt.
You're right about the weight, at least mine is a lightweight cotton twill (lighter than denim) but the fact that I can chuck it in the washing machine makes it possible to wear on a daily basis if I want to. But as you say nothing much can replace the feel of wearing a "proper" kilt.
