Well today's late afternoon and early evening has been a bit of a rough one.

Travis's tail had either been slammed in a car door when he was younger OR it was deformed and was a birth defect as it wasn't like other dog's tails as you couldn't feel any joints in most areas and with the bend in it at times he couldn't get it far enough out of the way to keep from pooping on it. So I made arrangements to have the Vet 'dock it' and surgery was today.

Last night I fed him about 3 hours early and I took him in this morning at 7:30 without breakfast. I got a call at 3 PM that he was out of surgery and I could pick him up at 4 PM.

I had a short wait in an examination room before he was brought in. He had the 'Cone' on and was still very groggy. The Dr arrived shortly and went over the procedure and sure as hell, he couldn't find a joint so he had to saw through the bone. He gave me two different pain pills and an antibiotic pill to give him morning and night and wanted me to make sure to give Travis the antibiotics with food as it could upset his stomach.

I live walking distance from the Veterinary Clinic and once home he wanted to stagger outside and he did pass a single log but no peeing.

The more he woke up the more he looked at me like he was being punished. He cowered, wouldn't look directly at me and whined almost constantly. But what really worried me was that he wouldn't eat or drink. Also once he'd gotten his legs back and I took him for a short walk, he wouldn't sniff at the usual telephone poles etc and mark them.

After four hours of this I decided to take the cone off. I then took him on another short walk, he marked the usual and when we got home he got a big drink but was ignoring his food so I poured a pint of salt and fat free home canned chicken bone broth on it and let it soak for 10 minutes. While the food was soaking he wanted to go outside and he peed more and took another dump and this time it was a big one.

So once the food had soaked he gobbled it down. He's still a bit pissed at me but he's getting much better.

I just hope he'll leave the bandage alone as I don't want to have to put that damn cone back on If I do have to put it back on-----just call me Dr Mengele

Travis will forgive you once he gets used to his new swagger.
Good idea to get that fixed up Roy. He’ll appreciate it without knowing it.
I finally got my contraband US pet meds released from the postal police after a month.
Ear drops for Buddy as he’s predisposed to ear wax and build up since a pup.
Stuff works the charm and he’s one happy puppy!

I do hope that he will forgive me and come back around to where he was yesterday. However I'm 99.99% sure that he's been abused in the past so it might be a long hard row to hoe.

For example when I first took him with me to Ski's to shoot pool in Ski's heated garage he was great! Wagging his ass, bugging Ski to pet him----UNTIL we picked up pool cues----------then he was cowering looking like he thought he was going to get a beating.

We've been to Ski's several times now and he no longer cowers like he did, but you can see that he's not very comfortable with those pool cues.

Thank Buddy for the warm wishes for me and Travis And give him a treat for us

You are a good pop Roy, Travis will be just fine within a week. Those dang satellite things are belittling to our pups...albiet necessary if they want to lick at a wound.

Poor, Travis. Hope he feels better soon. A good indication is that he’s eating again.

    Put the cone on
If he chews the bandage and tears the stitches you will have a lot of problems with infections.
If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

Just show him h ow much you love him. Dogs pick up on that. They are very resilient especially when they know they are safe emotionally and physically.

A couple of well timed treats will also help.

He is feeling better today. We had a good night last night. He slept on my bed all night and even let me sleep in.

For breakfast he only ate a few bites of the dry (and expensive) dog food so I put 1/2 pint of the same chicken bone broth in it and then he ate it all up. He readily took both pain pills and his antibiotics BUT yesterday when I gave them to him I didn't notice that he carried them in his mouth for about 15 minutes and spit them out when I let him outside to pee and poo. . But when I gave them back to him he swallowed them--go figure--Name: no see smily.gif

Another new change today is that for the first time since he got home he climbed up on to 'HIS Chair' and has been dozing on it off and on all day.

I took him to the Human Society's Dog Park to run and play and he had a ball. However when he took a dump there it was quite loose. He's had loose turds every now and then and the Vet prescribed some Probiotics and they have helped but not entirely stopped the occasional loose stools. I'm thinking that the antibiotics that I'm having to give him is messing with his gut and killing the helpful bugs.

He's only licked at the bandage a couple of times and when I tell him NO he leaves it alone so I think we'll make it to Monday as I believe that's when the bandage comes off. I failed to ask if the stitches were dissoluble so I need to send an email asking about that.

Anyway, it looks like we are on the right road to recovery.

Travis and I would like to thank all for the concern and well wishes.
