Thanked: 2209.
.
The conversation I had with TC occurred via text on my cellphone. I would post it here but I have yet to figure a way to get it over to my PC.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Not a 'jack-shaft" ? Starter shaft to flywheel issue. Perhaps bolt holding starter drive to flywheel? Also, is there some sort of solenoid or long threads on the shaft to introduce starter drive gear to flywheel? If starter is just spinning, I suppose removal of cover to see what's going-on. Should be obvious.
Just do it, Randy!

He’s hearing a grinding, so probably it is engaging but maybe not all the way or we’re talking damage to one or both gears at mesh up. That jack shaft bolt could be the issue too. I am waiting for detailed pictures from Randy after opening primary. Now it’s all simple stuff, just not sure on his model how much he needs to take off for starter removal and replace. Sometimes it’s easier to remove back tire and inner fender, still not a tough chore.
Ya Tom I’m old but if I remember right, didn’t Roger win 5 world championships on an RM 400? He was a beast, and ya that 400 scared the crap out of me too, still ran it in the ground cause I hate being scared. Was my last motocross, I gave them up in my 20,s I was just too stupid, now that pe your right it was almost a tru enduro, mine was different from the Rm cause the Rm was all there as soon as you got on the gas, that Pe, was set up to come in a little later, I,m sure the one I had was a 360, fun bike. ,“ I,m getting the impression that everyone thinks I have TIME to fix their bikes”

I don't know if these will be of any help, but they are from my Harley Davidson Shop Manual/for 1997 Softail Models:

All good pictures but we need to remember their not all the same. But his is this style stater, the newer ones have a different throw out, but all in all , even removing rear tire and oil jugs it’s a relatively easy 3-4 hour r&r, and so much fun, plus like I told Randy, might be time to get whole new clutch assembly Depends on if it’s the ring gear or not, but he had mentioned to me some clutch issues last year
Good stuff Tom“ I,m getting the impression that everyone thinks I have TIME to fix their bikes”
