The one on the right was an old estate pipe that was black and crusted but I got a glimmer of figuring in the ebay photo. So I put in a low ball bid and picked it up for $12. Gave it a good scrubbing to clean out years of gunk, started with tripoli and worked my way up to chrome oxide then wax. The stem got the same treatment to get the old brown discolouration out of it. Buffed up nicely.
    They look good Dave!

This is the first day this year when daytime temps are above 0 C. The spring is finally here and snow will be gone in 5 or 6 weeks maybe.
The time has come when i can enjoy my morning pipe outdoors without feeling too damn cold. So now it is time for some chocolate flake and morning coffee.
    Tomi,

I think if you have a good one dealer- he sometimes give you some samples of different tobaccos.
Years ago I ordered a lot of tobacco-boxes, now I should smoke it.

Thanks. The mug is carved of burl. These are called as 'kuksa' but i have no idea if there's translation for that. My pipe is Lorenzo Spitfire. One of those few times i've been lucky in estate auction. Usually these estate pipes need lot of work but this was almost unsmoked.

I know the feeling. There's always something new or different to try . I think i've found my holy grail of pipe tobacco from SG chocolate or Balkan flake. Of aromatics Da Vinci or Blue Note wasn't bad either.

Now this leads me into a question i have to ask you Thomas. You surely know better. Can you store or 'cellar' aromatic tobacco for longer period?

I do not know. I've told or maybe i've understood wrong that storing aromatics doesn't do good so i've never tried. I've stored some less aromatic blends for few years but always open the aromatic tin within a month after purchasing it. After opening it i just put the tobacco in the jar and smoke it all within few months.

How will the womenfolk react?
Restoring vintage pipes might be most interesting. I've never done that seriously, just cleaned few old estate pipes. There's a problem with eBay pipes nowadays. Just like vintage razors prices have gone over the top lately and you never know what you get as you can't actually inspect the pipe before purchasing. At least here you can make fine catches from estate auctions or flea markets every now and then.

What comes to the first lady here Well as long as the object i'm working with is small and cheap there is no much problem with the lady. Through the years she's seen me wasting my time on useless weird things such as tools, razors, lighters, "awkward mechanical things" (said she) and whatever. Besides she is too much into vintage furnitures etc stuff herself so cleaning and/or repairing some old table or chair or whatever every now and then for her makes us even (at least that is how i explain it to myself)
Back younger i was very much involved with vintage cars and later with motorcycles/scooters (i still am with these) and the feedback from her was much less creative back then.

Things could be worse. I have a friend who collects vintage phone booths . Really. Currently he has nine of them around his yard. I can only imagine the noise that comes from his wife whenever he happily brings new purchase home
