Thanked: 1185C&D Old Joe Krantz in a pre-1938 Kaywoodie Super Grain (5132C to be exact). Three smokes in this pipe today, driving to work, lunch break and I went to smoke on my afternoon break and discovered I only had one bowl left so I had a dip of Grizzly instead and saved the rest of the pipe tobacco for the ride home. Moral of the store: Preflight your gear! Headed out now for the post dinner smoke. This time it's C&D Billy Budd in a 8733 Kaywoodie Drinkless (another pre-1938 beauty)

Thanked: 203Hi Guys,
i have a modest collection of pipes i enjoy and i have some up with designs that i intend to have a go at making. My question is about the finish to the timber. Rather than carnuba wax, i was considering a CA finish {definitely only on the outside} as we do with razor scales. i have not come across anything like that in pipes that i have seen. Does anyone know of a reason to not try that?
RegardsRespectfully,
Adam.

Pipes are usually finished with natural waxes like carnauba, bees wax etc. They are not considered hard finishes as they let the pipe breath through finish. They do not seal the bowl.
Now i know that some synthetic laquers or CA works in high temps relatively well but i have no idea how does it stand as the bowl temperature goes up and down. Another thing to consider is that there will always be small amount of moisture from tobacco that absorbs in the wood and vanishes through the walls. If you seal the pipe with CA will it crack the finish?
If you have some cheap pipe to restore it might be worth trying to finish it with CA and watch how it works for few months.
Buckeye has made several fine pipes. Maybe he knows better about hard (CA etc) vs soft (wax) finishes.'That is what i do. I drink and i know things'
