If I remember correct in reading somewhrere that a ships compass is special due to the fact of how it used to be they didn't function well aboard ships due to magnetic issues ?

Used to be back then, but nowadays every ship has a magnetic deviation charts that are updated annually (at leat with navy ships here).
Having a magnetic compass is a sign of the past these days. Nowadays those 'skirt folks' (navigation personnel) use bit more modern things like dgps, navsat, egdis and such.
But we still have these compass roses as a sign of the past and everyone will have to get familiar with them. This one in the pic is on our gun deck and mostly used as my pipe holder

However, after serving for almost 10 years at mine sweeper for contact & magnetic & acoustic mines i've had a course or two on earth magnetism and i know pretty well about 'magnetic discipline' used by those who serve. It sucks. Nowadays i work at mine layer/transport ship and (luckily) we do not have to worry so much about such things any more.

While on the subject of Navigation. While a volunteer in the State Emergency Service here, we all had to learn how to read map and compass. I had already gained skills in this area, so it was just refresher for me, but we did get a few who wanted to know why, in todays day and age, when we have GPS, that we should have to learn the complexities of using out-dated skills that involved a whole bunch of magnetic deviation, Northings, Southings and grid references. The instructor handed them a GPS and told them to turn it on. They tried and couldn't because the batteries were flat. Thus was answered their question.

That's why I like to think that technology has two stages...one where it's useful, and practical and comfy enough and the next stage enhances and is more luxury but should never be relied on as the end all be all. That's just me though..caveman that I am.
