I might try it someday. Usually i'm not after heavily aromatized but occasionally i enjoy some. Specially W/O Larsens Signature and 1864 are ok. They can be smoked indoors too without getting mrs Sailor mad at me. Although my wife smokes indoors, i couldn't imagine trying Squadron Leader, Balkan Flakes or 1820 inside my house. I guess she would try hitting my head with a frying pan or something

Check out Dave's site (WBW) where you just got your churchwarden. He sells the vector butane pipe lighters. The inserts fit any zippo case. After using a zippo for many years I recently got one. It's a nice lighter. About the same price as a zippo. But the flame is adjustable and there's no lighter fluid taste. About the only thing I'd advise with them is to use the vector brand butane. All butane is not created equal so it seems and the vector stuff works great in these lighters particularly.

My understanding, with the MM freehand, is that it is the only pipe in the MM line that is made completely by hand, start to finish. Apparently, often by one person at the factory as well.

Again, my understanding of "freehand" pipes in general is that they have the characteristic of departing from the standard known shapes like billiard, Dublin, Rhodesian, or apple, etc. They often follow the whim of the hand carver and the natural characteristics of the particular briar they are carving. They are most always unique in some ways, even if similar. Eric Nording ( a Dane, i believe, as mentioned) is a good example of a pipe manufacturer today that makes affordable freehand designs (many get quite expensive) more than any other shape/type of pipe.

I'm no authority on the subject by any means. This is just what I've learned so far as I enjoy resarching these type of things. My research is always expanding, and therefore, limited.

Saturday evening with a new Stanwell HCA, tobacco & lager i recently found from Estonia.
Three nuns seems to be strongish no-nonsense straight VA blend. Very tasty.
Zippo from my army days, vintage devil tamper & excellent novel by Jim Harrison.

Way East of Danville, near South Hill but, out in the country. I was born here. It is my Mother's ancestral home. I grew up in Charleston and went to Marshall U, though. I have a strong attachment to West Virginia....Sister, many nieces, nephews and a slew of old friends, there.

    Keith,

A much better explanation of the MM Freehand for Mr. Loony, thanks! BTW, Phil has posted pictures of his beautiful Nordings some pages back.

dave thanks for the information on the vector lighters, will have to check them out, and also, thank you for explaining the free hand pipes. tomi, i love that pipe, someday i will own a stanwell hca. and actually 3 nuns is a fitting tobacco to smoke in a churchwarden. oldschool, thanks for the explaination on where southside is, i was curious of that. i spent a year in lynchburg, so that is why i asked.
